Wolverine Weekly Volume #2
AES weekly updates on school activities and events.
September 9-13, 2024
Our second week of the 2024-25 school year was another week focused on learning about The Wolverine Way and following our PAWS of Pride. Mr. Wells, our AES Dean, and I visited classrooms this week to review what it means to follow The Wolverine Way. Students also learned about some of the rewards we get for being respectful, responsible, ready and safe in all areas of the school including the playground and bus. We want everyone to feel safe and welcome at AES. Please ask your student to tell you how they followed The Wolverine Way this week.
Looking ahead to next week.
- Mott Dental will visit AES on Monday and Tuesday, September 9 & 10 for brief education sessions in the classrooms.
- Tuesday, September 10, is our first AES Parent Group / Parent Advisory meeting. We will discuss plans for events sponsored by the parent group and the Title I Parent Involvement Plan and Compact. Please join us at 6:00pm on Tuesday at AES!
- Wednesday, September 11, is our first early dismissal day. Students end their day at 1:58pm. Please call to let us know if there is a change in the transportation plan for your child as early as possible but at least before 1:30pm on Wednesday.
- School Picture Day is Thursday morning, September 12.
We have a busy third week of school!
Thank you for your support,
Mrs. Fonger
AES Principal
School Communication - Atherton App and Rooms
Have you downloaded the Atherton App? Did you accept the invitation to join your student's classroom Rooms?
Atherton has moved classroom news and teacher communications to families to Rooms. To access these communications, parents and guardians will need to download the Atherton App and accept the inviation to join your child's classroom Rooms. Invitations were sent out from edurooms.com at 5pm on Thursday, September 5. If you didn't receive an invitation, please contact your child's teacher or call the school office at 810-591-0604. Teachers started sending classroom news and messages to families using Rooms.
Atherton app can be downloaded from the Apple App store and Google Play on your cell phone, iPad or tablet. Please download the new app to keep up with news, activities and events. Having the Atherton App on your phone will also prepare you for receiving messages from your child's teacher through Rooms. Rooms will be used by classroom teachers to send classroom news or reminders instead of Class Dojo or Remind. Parents who have an email address or current cellphone number in Synergy will receive notifications through Rooms once it is launched.
School Picture Day
Strawbridge Photographers will be taking students' pictures at AES on Thursday, September 12 from 9-11am.
To receive emails letting you know when your pictures are ready to order as well as promotional deals and discounts on your child's pictures, please click on the following link. If you have any questions, please contact Strawbridge at cservice@strawbridge.net.

Arrival and Dismissal
Parent Loop:
Thank you, families, who use the parent drop-off and pick-up loop, for getting in line and staying in line throughout the process to keep everyone safe!
For families who pick-up their student(s) at the end of the school day, please display the student's first and last name and grade level on the passenger side of your dashboard. This will allow us to quickly call for your student and get them ready to walk out to you once your vehicle is in one of the pick-up slots. Our goal is to have a safe and quick parent pick-up loop every day!
District Bus Transportation:
Our transportation department now has 4 bus drivers which will allow for shorter rides for some of our AES students but did impact routes this week. Thank you for your patience with us as we finalize routes and help students learn which bus they ride to and from school. Please click on this memo from the Atherton Transportation Team.
Communicating Changes to Your Student's Transportation Plan:
In the event you need to change your student's transportaion plan from school for the day, our AES office must have that information before 3:00pm. No changes will be made after 3pm. This is the only way we can maintain a safe, accurate, speedy, and efficient dismissal.
Open House Paperwork
Please complete all paperwork that you received during our AES Open House, if you haven't already done so, and return each of the completed documents to your child's teacher. It's important for us to have these on file in the AES school office.
Monthly School Theme - September - Belonging and Community
There is strong evidence that having human connections and being successful at school are
related. Decades of research suggests having at least one strong and stable relationship with a
supportive adult is a key factor in helping children cope with high-stress situations.
Our district-wide theme over the next month is belonging. Staff and students are working on
building strong positive environments that are centered on belonging and getting to know one another. You might ask your child what they have been doing to make others feel they belong.
AES Parent Group Meetings
Please join us at our first AES parent group meeting on Tuesday, September 10th. We will be meeting in the cafeteria at 6pm to review parent involvement opportunities, Title I programming and AES continuous improvement initiatives.
All parents and guardians are invited! Hope to see you there!
AES Title I Night - September 26 4:30-6pm
Please plan to attend our AES Title I Event. The evening will include information about our Title I programs, a pizza dinner and fun learning activities for families to do together focused on reading and math.
The Title I Annual Parent Meeting will be held at 4:45 and 5:30pm. This presentation by Mrs. Fonger will provide parents with information about Title I, Part A Federal Funds and how AES uses these funds to provide high quality instruction and supports for our AES students and families. And it's a chance for families to tell us what they would like from us, too.
School Lunch Menu
AES serves breakfast and lunch to all students daily. Chartwells School Dining Services is the district contractor and provider of meals and services for our students.

21st Century Community Learning Center - After School Program
We are so grateful that the GISD has partnered with AES to provide after school programming through the 21st CCLC grant again for the 2024-2025 school year. Angie Ortiz is the program coordinator and is planning fun, enriching experiences for our AES students again this year. The program starts next Monday, September 9 for enrolled and confirmed students. Please call 810-600-9822 with questions.
Tips for a positive start to the school year!
Being mentally healthy during childhood means reaching developmental and emotional milestones and learning healthy social skills and how to cope when there are problems. Mentally healthy children have a positive quality of life and can function well at home, in school, and in their communities. Please click on the link for tips to help children under 12 kick off the school year feeling emotionally ready.
