November Observances
Native American Heritage Month
National Native American Heritage Month is celebrated each year in November. It is a time to celebrate the traditions, languages and stories of Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and affiliated Island communities and ensure their rich histories and contributions continue to thrive with each passing generation. In 1990, President George H. W. Bush approved a joint resolution designating November 1990 βNational American Indian Heritage Month.β Similar proclamations, under variants on the name (including βNative American Heritage Monthβ and βNational American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Monthβ) have been issued each year since 1994.
Diwali - Divali - Deepavali
Diwali, celebrated by Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs, is a major festival that lasts five days, typically falling between late October and November. The word "Diwali" comes from the Sanskrit "dipavali," meaning "row of lights," and the festival represents the triumph of light over darkness.
Veterans Day
November Awareness
National Alzheimerβs Disease Awareness Month
Six million Americans live with Alzheimerβs Disease and almost three million new cases are diagnosed annually. This progressive and deadly brain disease has no cure. However, researchers are still working hard to discover its cause. This month, we celebrate those living with the disease, their caregivers, and the healthcare professionals who treat them.
World Diabetes Day β November 14
Nearly a century after the discovery of insulin, this world health day raises challenges that those living with diabetes face daily. Today, we focus on advocating for the need for access to diabetic care throughout the world.
International Day For Tolerance β November 16
Established in 1996, this day promotes respect for the worldβs cultures, languages, and religions. Today is a day to educate the general public about the need for universal human rights for all humans.
Staff Spotlight/Shout Outs π
Lauren VanNess
I'd like to shout out Lauren VanNess. She's been giving me lots of tips and tricks to use for supporting older students, which I am adjusting to since moving from first grade to third. I appreciate her taking the time to listen to me and helping to make me feel supported with fun ideas.
~ Abbey Collins
Lindsey Turnwald
I want to shout out Lindsey Turnwald. Lindsey has been helping me make the transition from using paper and pencil quick quizzes and tests in math, to having the kids take them online (which will hopefully boost their NWEA/MSTEP confidence). She even showed me a cool tool she uses to help them organize their thoughts and work, and then how to use that data to show how to report where they are at when it comes to the standards so that I can send it home to the parents.
~ Abbey Collins
Kari Atkins & Rusty Rogers
I want to shout out Kari Atkins and Rusty Rogers for helping to create a post on ParentSquare. Last year we did a cancer foundation coin fundraiser for the Michigan vs Michigan State game and I happened to stumble across the email chain while searching for something else. I reached out to the staff in hopes that we could do it again and very quickly Kari and Rusty pulled together the details to send out to the parents. I really appreciate their effort to help others!

Did you know... π‘
Did you know trees can communicate?
Trees talk. Their roots are connected through an underground network of fungi, nicknamed the βWood Wide Web,β that allows them to share resources with each other. They βtalkβ by transmitting nutrients to one another through the fungi. For instance, a mother tree, or oldest and strongest tree in the forest, will share some of her sugars with smaller, nearby trees.
