MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
Greetings MVCSD Community,
This week, students throughout the District began competing in the Stock Market Game. This District-wide Career and Technical Education initiative was designed to promote financial literacy, and it provides students with a fun avenue for learning about the markets. Financial literacy encompasses all the regular subjects that students learn about, and it will be an important skill for students for the rest of their lives.
I attended the opening of the calm room at Mount Vernon High School last Friday, and this is a great resource for our students to support their emotional well-being and ensure that they are in a positive mindset for learning. Thank you to Dr. Pearce and the team at MVHS for setting this up for our scholars and thank you to The Social Butterfly for the generous donations to support our students and create this space!
We are spotlighting Mount Vernon STEAM Academy senior Ashley Guzman for this week’s Senior Spotlight Series. Ashley is an Advanced Placement (AP) honors student, a poet, and is very active in the STEAM Academy community. She has great ambition and is even planning to triple major in college. Good luck Ashley!
This week, students across the District learned about and celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. At Denzel Washington School of the Arts, students in Ms. Atterberry’s class constructed Dream Towers, drawing on the “I Have a Dream” speech for inspiration. The lessons from Dr. King’s life are vital, and teaching students about the Civil Rights leaders of the past is so important. We want to impart on students the significance of these important moments in history.
Parents, please join us at Parent Involvement Day on Monday, February 10! Your involvement in your children's education is so beneficial to them, and I am looking forward to seeing all the families who join us. You will learn about resources that are available to you and your students and how you can further support their education.
Kindest Regards,
Dr. K. Veronica Smith
Acting Superintendent of Schools
