Hope Squad empowers student mental health
Rebecca Chura, a Coronado High School social worker, meets with members of the school's Hope Squad.
Hope Squad, an initiative at over 30 high and middle school campuses in CCSD, is a proactive and student-driven approach to mental health and well-being.
The big picture: The program aligns closely with CCSD’s broader commitment to creating safe, supportive environments for all students, said Monica Martin, director of the CCSD Guidance and Counseling Department.
Hope Squad members learn about building relationships and cultivating empathy with their peers, serving as a connector between a struggling classmate and a safe adult who can then guide the youth in crisis to the appropriate support system, Martin said.
What they’re saying: “Coronado High School's Hope Squad has helped develop a culture and mindset where student mental health matters,” said Rebecca Chura, a social worker at the school and student advisor for Hope Squad.
Chura said that through monthly "Hope Events" at Coronado, Hope Squad members engage with their peers through planned activities that foster unity, encouragement, and hope.
The goal of the events is twofold: fostering open dialogues about the importance of student well-being and having Hope Squad members be recognizable in their classrooms as peers who are safe to reach out to in times of crisis, Chura said.
Teens are more likely to talk to other teens before they turn to an adult, Chura said, so having Hope Squad members on campus provides an added layer to a student's "safety net" while at school.
“I’ve witnessed the impact of Hope Squad in building mental health support in our community,” said Abigail Watanabe, a Coronado student and member of the Hope Squad. “I think we are effective in reaching our peers and spreading a message of hope.”
