Elkins Pointe Family Summer News
June 18, 2024
MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Hello Titan Families,
I am a little later than hoped in getting this newsletter to you. While in Guatemala, I learned that I do not have access to emails and other FCS platforms. Needless to say, I came back to a giant pile of work. It is all good stuff, but I am definitely a bit behind.
I wanted to share that several parents reached out, stating that they should not be on the mailing list because their child is headed to high school. You are correct! However, I cannot change the list until July, when your student matriculates and officially becomes a student at their assigned high school. For the next week or so, you will still hear from me. I will take this opportunity to share some information about high school summer work. You can click here to view the 8th Grade Promotion Photo Gallery.
Also, I hope our fathers in the community had a great day on Sunday. The fathers in our lives play such an impactful role. I spent the afternoon with my uncle because my dad is in TN. On Father's Day, I was able to ask my uncle questions about his best memory of his dad and other questions like his favorite memory of each of his sons. The conversation was good, and it reminded me that most of us are in the midst of parenting. My uncle has children my age (VERY grown), and he is in a different place. Watching him reflect on his memories was such a beautiful sight. It made me realize that the 1,000 missteps I make as a parent are far less significant in the long run. So, during the summer months, I hope you remember to make those memories. I hope that you enjoy the sunshine and laugh with your child. In just a few years, your child will be moving on to the next stage of their life that may or may not be in your home. Thank you to all our dads!
In closing, I hope our families are enjoying making special memories this summer. As a parent who works throughout the summer, I know that summers are not as spectacular as I would like. I miss my teaching days when I was able to spend each day with my children during the summer. However, I have learned that I am still able to make big memories in the little things of summer. Picnics at the pool, park time in the evenings, and summertime late-night movies are the things that I hope my children will look back on one day with a smile and happiness in their hearts.

CONGRATS!
Congratulations to Mrs. Monique Erskine-Wilson! She has served as our graduation coach, but your student will know her for being on the Titan Morning News, as the Champion of PBIS, and for the RISE Up PBIS Store and fun events! Ms. Erskine-Wilson has been promoted to the Assistant Principal of Hembree Springs Elementary School! Please join me in a HUGE congrats on her new role. She will be missed at Elkins Pointe, but we are happy to see her impact expand in this new venture at our feeder elementary school.
FULTON COUNTY CODE OF CONDUCT REVIEW
Parents and Families,
The summertime is a great time for our families to dive into things at school. I know that sounds silly, but if you are like me, there is no time in August to review EVERYTHING. This summer, I will send a portion or two of the Student Code of Conduct so that you know by the time school starts. Please feel free to email me with any questions at smithaj3@fultonschools.org.
Sincerely,
AJ Smith, Principal
Attendance Policy in the Student Code of Conduct
HOW DO I CHECK MY CHILD'S ATTENDANCE?
Parents/Guardians can log into Infinite Campus to view their child's attendance. For additional support with accessing and using Infinite Campus, visit the Infinite Campus Handbook for Parents (page 8) or view this video.
WHAT IS THE PARENT'S RESPONSIBILITY WHEN A CHILD IS ABSENT?
-
Parents should notify the school before or after the absence(s).
- Notes should be directed to the Elkins Pointe Front Office (attendance owner) at the school.
- A handwritten note or email should be submitted to the front office.
- Notification from parents should happen no later than 5 days after the absence.
HOW DO I CONTACT THE ELKINS POINTE FRONT OFFICE?
- Mrs. Ainara Sorozabal - Reception Desk (Miss Ainara)
- Mrs. Denise Lewis - Reception Desk (Miss Denise)
- Ms. Teri Dixon - Data Clerk
- Email the front office at epmsfrontoffice@fultonschools.org
HOW IS ATTENDANCE DETERMINED FOR STUDENTS?
Middle School: Attendance is taken each period.
Students must be present for 50% or more of the day to be marked present.
WHEN ARE PARENTS NOTIFIED REGARDING AN ABSENCE?
- Middle School messages begin going out around 4:30 p.m. on the day of the absence.
- If your student is absent or misses one or more periods of the school day, they will be marked with an "A" (for absent) in our attendance system, and you will receive an automated phone call and email message to the designated contact info you provided in Infinite Campus. This includes excused absences that are approved in advance.
- Errors can occur, and if you feel you received a phone call by mistake, contact your school front office to verify that your student’s attendance record is accurate.
- If your student's absence was unexpected, please remember to contact your child's school by sending in a note or email so the absence can be marked "excused" in the system.
WHAT IS THE PROCESS FOR ATTENDANCE CALLS & EMAILS?
- Parents and Guardians will be notified regularly when students are absent. Infinite Campus (IC) will send an email when an absence occurs. In addition, an automatic phone call will be made when your child is absent. The graphic below shows when parent contact will be made.
- When students miss 5% or 10% of school, parents will receive additional text messages and letters about student attendance.

ROSWELL HIGH SCHOOL 10th GRADE HONORS LIT SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENT
MESSAGE TO RISING FRESHMEN TAKING 10TH GRADE HONORS LIT AT ROSWELL HIGH SCHOOL:
10th Honors SUMMER READING Assignment 2024
Because reading, evaluating, and writing about literary texts is at the heart of the 10th grade Honors English Literature course, summer reading is required for all students. An understanding of common texts is essential for initiating conversation and sharpening evaluation from the first day of the course.
SUMMER READING ASSIGNEMENT:
Read the following novel, paying attention to structure, style, and themes, as well as character development, setting, symbol and motif, irony, tone, repetitive elements, etc. Note aspects throughout the work that you find significant. Annotations are highly encouraged as any notes you can make will be helpful when referring back to this novel once school begins. If you use an audiobook, you may want to find a way to take note of significant elements. Audiobook length: 11 hours, 43 min.
"A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khalid Hosseini"
The deadline for having the books read is the first day of fall semester. Registering for this course indicates a commitment on the student’s part to follow through with course assignments. A failure to complete the summer reading assignment is not a valid reason to request a schedule change at the beginning of fall semester.
If you have any questions about the reading or the course, please contact us at any time. You can see Ms. Mathis in room 508 at Roswell High School or email her at mathissl@fultonschools.org.
We hope that you enjoy the reading. Have a great summer!
