School and Illness: Should your child stay home?
This is the time of the year when children get ill. Hand-washing is the best way to protect ourselves from illnesses. In the classroom, we teach children about hand-washing through songs and storytelling.
Young children learn through their 5 senses because germs can’t be seen, felt, tasted, or heard, making them understand through play is a great idea to teach the importance of proper washing. A book and video I recommend are “Germs are not for sharing.”
Click on the link bellow then click on Germ Smart Childcare Facilities for hand-washing videos, lessons and activities to teach your child about germs.
*Please make sure your child stays home if they are not feeling well. The following guidelines will help you decide whether your child is too ill to go to school.
•He/She seems very tired and needs bed rest (this is common with flu symptoms).
• Has vomiting or diarrhea.
• Has distracting pain from an earache, headache or a sore throat.
• Breaks out in a rash; not all rashes require that a child stays home from school. Check with your child’s doctor.
For more information, you can check in the Parent Handbook on page 9.
Connecting Home to School:
This month’s Parent Involvement activity will be to research your child’s favorite animal. After researching, parents will ask their children the following questions and discuss their answers. Is your favorite animal a mammal or a carnivore? How many legs does your animal have? Does your animal fly, swim or walk? After asking these questions children will create a collage about his or her favorite animal along with their habitat and their needs. Children will be presenting their project to the class during circle time.
This project is due November 9th.
