DISTRICT UPDATE
May 2024
Dear Parents, Guardians, and Staff,
We have revised the school calendar, taking into account the April storm that came in with a force. Please note that the two snow days used now put our last day of school as Wednesday, June 12th (early release). Iโd also like to acknowledge the BHS student-athletes, coaches, and staff who helped transform Tiger Gym into sleeping quarters for the CMP line crews who were in our area restoring power.
As we celebrate Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week (May 6-10) this month, Iโd like to express our sincere gratitude for their compassion and dedication on behalf of the Biddeford and Dayton School Departments and, more importantly, to the lives of our students. From teachers to bus drivers to custodial staff, their contributions do not go unnoticed, and we appreciate the positive impact they have on our students. The School Committee and our entire Administrative Team value and acknowledge the vital role our staff plays in the future success of our community's youth.
SCHOOL BUDGET VOTE
Please mark your calendar to vote for the 2024-2025 School Budget on Tuesday, June 11th (7am-8pm) in Biddeford and Thursday, June 13th (6:30pm) in Dayton. Although itโs a challenging year, we continue to seek innovative ways to meet the budget constraints, and with your support, we can continue making a positive difference for students. A formal public hearing of the 2024-2025 School Budget will be held on Tuesday, May 7th from 6-9pm at City Hall (Linked here), and in Dayton, the proposed budget is available online (Linked here).
END-OF-YEAR EVENTS
As we begin our slide into home plate, Spring yields many end-of-the-year events (see below and be sure to pay close attention to information sent home in the coming weeks). This is a hectic yet exciting time of year for our students and their families, and we look forward to celebrating the many achievements ahead. All events listed by school are linked here (scroll to the bottom for Dayton Consolidated School).
My Best,
Jeremy Ray
Superintendent of Schools

IN THE NEWS ๐ฐ
Adult Education Students Taking Care of Our Seniors
Congratulations to Biddeford Adult Education students (left to right) Dorcas Mayamba, Desange Matsanga, and Mavinga Yemo for advancing their education and choosing a career in healthcare. In addition to their NorthStar Digital Literacy, EnGEN HealthCare, and English Language Learners classes at Adult Ed, they all attended a Personal Support Specialist (PSS) class at Avita in Westbrook and did their clinical at The Landing at Saco Bay, a Memory Care Facility. Upon completing their certificate program, they were hired by The Landing and are now caring for our communityโs seniors.
Congratulations to the Hall of Honor Class of 2023 Inductees
The Hall of Honor was established in 2013 when the first 16 inductees were honored with this prestigious recognition. Over the last decade, Biddeford has inducted nearly 100 individuals as outstanding athletes, coaches, and contributors into the Athletic Hall of Honor. These individuals represent our school and community's proud history, tradition, and story. The list is diverse; males and Females represent nearly every athletic offering and spanning almost 100 years of our school's history.
This year's inductees included:
Class of 2006-2007 Boys Ice Hockey Team
Leo Cantara, Class of 1969
Chris Cote, Class of 1992
Michelle (Gagnon) Owen, Class of 2006
Roland Labonte, Class of 1959 (St. Louis)
Casey Laflamme, Class of 1998
Mildred Pelletier, Class of 1978
At the conclusion of the ceremony, inductees and guests attended a social at Dutch Elm Golf Club.

NWEA Testing This Month
Students will be completing the Spring NWEA testing this month. This computer-based test, which is part of the Maine Comprehensive Assessment System, helps teachers understand studentsโ areas of strength and areas for growth in Math, Reading, Language, and/or Science (testing based on grade). The test adapts as each student answers questions correctly or incorrectly to try to identify their current achievement level.
To support your child in doing their very best, we encourage the recommended hours of sleep, a healthy breakfast at home or at school, and conversations at home about taking their time and doing their best. Please review the letter included below, which explains more, and reach out to your child's teacher if you have any additional questions regarding NWEA testing. For more information, click the following links by district: Biddeford / Dayton.
