Application for Education Benefits
It is critical that all families complete an Application for Education Benefits each school year. These applications determine how much funding your child’s school receives for educational programs and supports. Additionally, eligible families can qualify for other benefits. Paper applications are available at school or can be completed online at schoolcafe.com/spps.
Principal News
Dear OES Parents,
Classroom teachers are now ready for conferences. They will share what your children are learning and what areas some may need some support.
You may have already received an invitation to access calendly to schedule your conference time. If this is not the case, please contact your child's teacher right away. We really want to see you there.
Please, feel free to attend this meeting with some questions for your child's teacher. Ask teachers for other engaging activities or ideas that your kid could engage in to learn or reinforce what they are learning in class.
Let's make sure this conference is more of a discussion or a conversation than a speech. We are here to work together. Let's talk about what the needs of the students are and how we can support them for personal and academic success.
Please check your email account frequently to learn more about the upcoming OES Parent-Teacher conferences.
Conferences:
Thursday, November 7th PM, 4:30 pm- 8:00 pm
Friday, November 8th, 9:00 am–3:00 pm
Sincerely,
John Osorio

4th Grade
4th graders are writing opinion essays on a topic of their choice using facts to support each reason for their opinion. They are engaging in a variety of writing activities in order to practice every step of the writing process including brainstorming, pre-writing, writer’s circles and revising/editing.
In math, we are practicing various mental math strategies like multiplying numbers in different orders, using expanded form and basic facts to multiply and using multiples of 10, 100 and 1,000. We also practice close reading strategies on work problems such as identifying vocabulary and highlighting the key details and questions.
We are also learning about reading different kinds of maps and finding map coordinates using latitude and longitude. This Geography unit will last well into November. Try looking at some fun locations together on Google Earth at home!
Students are compiling examples of their best work in a slideshow for conferences. I encourage you to bring your child to conferences so that they can share what they are most proud of. They’ve been working very hard!

In math we are finishing up our unit on evaluating numerical expressions (please ask your student what this means! We have worked VERY hard on our vocabulary!)
Students have been working on self confidence and identifying fuerte and piano tones in music.
For literacy, students have been working in their reading groups, learning about idioms, similes, and metaphors. They are finishing up their work on retelling their tall tale that they have been studying. Some students are even telling stories from their culture!
Conferences will be next week on Tuesday and Thursday evening and then Friday day time. If you have not signed up yet, please use THIS LINK to do so.

Art
Welcome to week 9! This week Kindergarten artists are learning about the changing seasons and studying details in leaves. We created our own leaf or nature inspired letter art. Also, we read the book Going On a Leaf Hunt by Steve Metzger and created our own squirrel drawings with leaves.
Third grade artists are using their critical thinking skills with VTS, Visual Thinking Strategies, as they look at and share ideas about various works of art that depict different seasons. After class discussion on the professional works of art the third grade artists created their own tree art thinking about proportion, texture and emphasis.

News from Nurse Jenny
Did you know that there are over 470,000 children that have been diagnosed with epilepsy and seizures in the United States? A seizure happens when the electrical part of a person’s brain is overloaded. This can cause loss of consciousness, convulsions (whole body shaking), confusion, brief periods of staring, a sudden feeling of fear or panic or uncontrolled shaking of an arm or leg. A person is diagnosed with epilepsy when they have more than 1 seizure without a direct medical cause or are at increased risk for having multiple seizures.

Title I
Dear Parents,
Please spend some time talking to your kids about the Home-School Compact's Shared Responsibilities. Making sure that parents, instructors, and children are cooperating is our top priority. Each of us has a role to play in your child's academic achievement. We become more conscious of the behaviors we must follow in order to succeed after we have talked about and learnt about our responsibilities.
Please talk about the duties outlined in the Home-School Campact that you and your kid have.
During the next conferences, classroom teachers will discuss the Shared Responsibilities listed in the Home-School Compact for Student Achievement.
