A Little House and a Legacy...
A guide to the controversy over a name change
An ALA Smore report by Caitlin Jacobson, June 2018
What happened?
The award given by ALSC for lifetime achievement by an author or illustrator in children's literature was changed from the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award to the Children's Literature Legacy Award. The first recipient of the Legacy Award was Jacqueline Woodson.
Speeches will be available online soon here.
Why did it happen?
For a number of years there has been ongoing concern that this award in particular does not reflect the values of ALSC as an organization. Wilder's books have been critiqued because of their negative portrayals of, and statements about non-white characters.
