It’s the final week of semester and HMS gears up for students in a variety of ways. First, many students who returned from virtual education after Thanksgiving break underwent academic recovery to improve their grades. Counselors and our intervention coach put those students on a plan to improve their semester outcome.
Secondly, our counselors and intervention coach have targeted students who presently fail two or more classes. Those students who end up with those semester results will attend academic recovery during the third quarter where they can work to remediate on previous lessons, while also maintaining grades for the upcoming quarter. In addition, we will provide academic recovery for virtual students (virtually) and we will provide more information about that in the coming weeks.
Another important academic update is HMS tested ALL students last week to determine progress made in the area of reading and math. SOAR time is a thirty minute period where students build knowledge and skills in their individualized iReady online curriculum, and our first big test was in August. The big questions are, “How much progress have students made from August and December?,” and “How has I-Ready helped students narrow their learning gap (due to the pandemic)?” HMS PLC Leadership team meets this Wednesday to discuss academic recovery, recent I-Ready results, and other areas of student achievement.
HMS looks forward to additional virtual students who return second semester and the deadline for student intent is January 15th. I am personally very excited to nearly have first semester completed, and look forward to second semester.
