Vaping: What You Need to Know
Vaping is the inhaling of an aerosol (mist) created by an electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) or other vaping device. The aerosol is not just water vapor. It usually contains nicotine, other harmful chemicals, and flavorings. Even e-cigarettes that claim to have no nicotine have been found to contain nicotine. Some might contain marijuana, herbs, or oils.
How to Explain Respect to a Teenager
Respect is a vital ingredient in any healthy relationship.
It's especially important to teach teens how to respect others since they're still developing their social skills and learning how to interact with others.
5 Ways Social Media Affects Teen Mental Health
It should come as no surprise that the pressure to be available 24/7 on social media is a very real challenge for today's teenagers. Aside from the fact that their grasp of and dependence on social media far exceeds that of many adults, they also are using social media at much greater rates too.

Reminders
Please be sure your scholar comes to school in uniform. (Tops: white, blue, navy blue / Bottoms: navy blue, khaki, tan, black)
All electronics 📵are to be silenced or turned off and placed into your scholar's 🎒backpack. Confiscated cellphones will have to be signed out 15 minutes after dismissal. Depending on how many scholars need to sign out their cellphones, the process may take 10+ minutes. Remind your scholar: To prevent the delay, please put all your electronics away.
Families, please continue to pull over properly to let your scholar out and have him/her cross at the corner of 139th and Yukon Ave. Hawthorne School District has worked with HPD to ensure the safety of your scholar by providing HSD schools with a 🛑 crossing guard✋BCMS is lucky to have Mr. Terry as our crosswalk guard.
Tardy Phone Calls
When your scholar is tardy to any periods from Period 2 through 7, parents/guardians will receive an automated nightly phone call from PowerSchool.
Scholars have 3 minutes to get from class to class. Most often, classes are just a few doors away from one another. Parents/guardians may be surprised by how often their scholar is tardy to class - these minutes add up during the week, month, and year. Have a conversation with your scholar to encourage him/her to transition from one class to the next, quickly, as not to miss any academic instruction. This also helps to prevent any peer issues during passing periods. Thank you so much for your help!
BCMS Bell Schedule
Does your scholar have lunch #1 or lunch #2? Schedules are different depending on which lunch.

Safety of all our students is a top priority at BCMS. Reports go directly to the school administration. The report will be investigated and your student can choose to remain anonymous unless he or she requires follow-up.
Visitors MUST Show ID
Parents/Guardians - emergency contact members of our BCMS Scholars:
You must bring a valid ID to pick up your scholar, drop off food, or visit our campus. All IDs are scanned and checked each and every time. This is for the safety of all our scholars and staff. If you are visiting our school, meeting a staff member, or picking up your scholar early, you will also need to either sign in or sign your scholar out in our logs. Thank you for helping us keep our campus safe.
Absent Note Needed
If your child is absent from school, please write a note to explain the absence. Include the following info.:
● Full name of the student
● Date(s) or time of absence
● Reason for absence (BE SPECIFIC)
● Telephone numbers where parent or guardian can be reached
● Signature of parent or guardian
If a student does not bring a note, he/she will be marked as unexcused until verification is received from parent or guardian.
Absent Note to School Template 2022
Personal electronic devices
Cellphones are to be turned silent or off & in backpacks during the school day including:
- Phones
- Earbuds/headphones
- Reading devices
- Smartwatches
If electronics are used WITHOUT permission from school staff, scholars will have to wait 15 minutes after dismissal to pick up the item(s) and sign out for them. Depending on how many scholars need to sign out their cellphones, the process may take 10+ minutes. To prevent the delay, please put all your electronics away.
The fourth time electronics are taken from the scholar, a parent/guardian, must pick up the item(s) 15 minutes after dismissal and sign out for it. If unauthorized electronics usage continues, the scholar will be placed on an electronic agreement which includes checking in all electronics with the dean, counselor, or an admin before the school day and checking out the item(s) at the end of the school day.
Remind your scholar..."Put all your electronics away to prevent the after-school delay" or "To prevent the delay, put all your electronics away."
Districtwide School Uniform Expectation
Uniforms are the expected daily clothing attire. If your scholar is waiting for their uniform order request from the district office, please be sure to still adhere to school dress code expectations. Clothing should be free from frays, rips, tears, holes - even as a fashionable design. Scholars must wear shirts, pants, skirts, and/or shorts that are school-appropriate in length and size. Slogans, brands, ads, TV shows, and/or movies must be appropriate for the school setting. Absolutely no slippers, Crocs, or shoes that have no heels as all scholars have PE daily.
Scholars not in appropriate school clothes can call home to have a parent/guardian to bring a change of clothing or be loaned school uniform for the day.
No Food Service Delivery for Students
SCHOLARS are not allowed to have Doordash, Postmates, Uber Eats, Grubhub or any other food service deliver food during school hours. It is unsafe and against school rules.
If parents or guardians are dropping off food:
You must bring a valid ID to drop off food as your child's safety is our priority. We need to confirm your identity before we can have your child receive any food items. You must be on the scholar's PowerSchool contact list. All IDs are scanned and checked each and every time.
