Counselors Corner
Hello Brimfield Families!
Having open conversations with your students about cell phone safety is a crucial conversation to have with your student! Setting expectations and boundaries is important for students so they know what is safe for them, what is not safe and so they know they can share if they have a problem. The more you have an open dialogue with your students about technology, the more they will be willing to confide in you and come to you if there is a problem. Here are some tips for parents to manage their child's cell phone:
Set clear rules and boundaries: It's important to establish clear rules and boundaries with your child about their cell phone use. This includes setting limits on screen time, establishing guidelines for appropriate usage, and discussing the consequences for breaking the rules.
Monitor their activity: Keep an eye on your child's cell phone activity, who they are texting or who is texting them, the apps they use and the websites they visit. There are parental control apps and software that can help you monitor your child's online activity.
Have an open dialogue: Encourage your child to talk to you about their cell phone use and any concerns they may have. Keep the lines of communication open and non-judgmental.
Set a good example: Children often model their behavior after their parents, so it's important to model responsible cell phone use. Avoid using your phone excessively or in inappropriate situations.
Consider using parental controls: Parental controls can help limit access to certain apps or websites, restrict screen time, and set bedtimes for the device.
Educate your child about online safety: Teach your child about the importance of online safety, including how to avoid cyberbullying, protect personal information, and stay safe while using social media.
Encourage other activities: Encourage your child to engage in other activities, such as reading, outdoor play, or spending time with friends and family, to reduce their reliance on their cell phone.

FIELD DAY NEWS!
This years field day will have a similar set up to last years with some new activities. We will have 12 stations which means we will have 2 classes of the same grade level at each station (for example k-1 and k-2 will be at the same station together and k-3, k-4 will be at the same station together). Your class will start at the station listed below and rotate in numerical order from that point on similar to last year. When the time is up the volunteers will rotate the students to the next station. There will be a lot of parent volunteers running each station this year. Each teacher will rotate around with their students to each station. Some stations have a competitive nature to them, others do not. If a station is too complicated for younger grades (k, 1st) or too simple for older grades (4th, 5th) I recommend taking a water/bathroom break as it will most likely be hot out and the students will probably get tired.
Planning Time Coverage:
○ 9:30- 10:15: fourth and fifth grade- Tutak (Gazdacko), Kuzas (Reagon), James(Porter), Marks(Starkey), Hachita (Hunsicker), Spaeth (Hackim), Brindle (Yoho)
○ 10:15- 11:00: kindergarten and first grade- James(Gempel), Kuzas (Mullaly), Marks (Covert), Gilbert (Harris), Brown (Scalise), Tutak(Shaffer), Brindle(Carrerira), Ronowski (Hlad)
○ 1:15- 2:00: second and third grade- Ganzer(Clem), Luchka (Swartz), Schippert(Pope), Horvatic (Bellian), Ronowski (Anderson), Hachita (Rhoades), Brown(Morrison), Spaeth(Hardy)
Schedule: We will once again have two 1.5 hour sessions for field day. The morning session will run from 9:30-11:00 and the afternoon session will run from 1:00-2:30. Each station will be 15 minutes long. You will do 6 stations in the morning, and then pick up where you left off in the afternoon with the last 6 stations. See the schedule below:

Station 1: DJ Station - (K-1, K-2 start here)
Volunteers: AM: Jason Scherer (9:30-10:15), Katie Kirby/Amy Madden (10:15-11:00), Hannah Mars, Alicia Schrenk, Wendi Holcomb, Jen Urban, Melissa Capretta
PM: Jason Scherer, Hannah Mars, Christina Laughlin, Alicia Schrenk, Melissa Capretta, Mary Robinson
Students can listen to music, and dance. Feel free to do some line dances with the 3-5 students. Some of them will know the Cupid Shuffle and The Cha Cha Slide.
Station 2: Inflatables In Gym- (K-3, K-4 start here)
Volunteers: AM: Mary Parsons, Tom Daugherty, Josh Bartholomen, Britta Hirt, Michelle Myers, Arwen/Mike Smith
PM: Alan Vanderink, Josh Bartholomen, Britta Hirt, Anne Stewart, Brittany Smith, Stephanie Moskal, Arwen/Mike Smith
There will be a bounce house inflatable and an obstacle course inflatable. Volunteers make sure students take shoes off and are taking turns every 2 minutes. You can let the kids choose which inflatable they want to go to. I will let volunteers know more about the inflatables/the rules to the inflatables on field day after they get delivered.
Exit school through car rider doors to the next station!
Station 3: Dunk Tank/Water Spray (1-1, 1-2 start here)
Volunteers: AM: Mrs. Starkey (9:30-10:15), Mr. Scherer (10:15-11:00), Rachel Lyon, Nancy Wilson, Brittany Helmling, Kristin Fields, Rita Battaglia
PM: Mr. Tutak (1:00-1:45), Mr. Turner (1:45-2:30), Nancy Wilson, Megan Andrella, Alan Chaplin, Brittany Helmling, Rita Battaglie
At this station, have students line up to take turns throwing a ball at the target to dunk a teacher/volunteer. Monitor to make sure students stay in a line so that we can keep the line going and so everyone gets a chance. While students wait there will be a hose that you can spray the kids with if they want you to. I recommend having students sit down on the sidewalk once they have gone. If there is time left once everyone has gone they can go again
Station 4: Catching Rain (1-3, 1-4 start here)
Volunteers: AM: Matt & Jenna Farley, Tiffany Graham, Amanda Lewis, Sarah Pryor, Katie Hall
PM: Matt & Jenna Farley, Tiffany Graham, Tracy McClellan, Michelle Gutierrez, Sarah Pryor, Katie Hall
This station is a water activity using water squirters and sand buckets. The goal is to be the team to catch the most amount of “rain” in their team's sand bucket. This will be done in a relay race style.
Start by putting students into 8 groups and having them line up behind a cone. Choose one student to start out being the “rain catcher” who will be holding their team's sand bucket and trying to catch the water. This student will stand across from the rest of the team at the other end of the activity space next to their cone. The rest of the students will take turns running to fill up their water squirter (there will be two mini pools in the middle of the activity space) and then attempting to spray the water into the air so that the “rain catcher” can catch as much water in the rain bucket as possible. I will have a hula hoop on the ground where the water squirter will have to stand. After the water is gone from the water squirter, the student runs back to the beginning and hands the water squirter to the next student in line. After a few minutes you can stop the game to determine which team has more rain in their bucket to deem the winner. Make sure to recycle as much water as possible by dumping the water back into the mini pools at the end of each game. You can then choose a new rain catcher and play again. Feel free to make this activity super competitive or more relaxed depending on the age of students.
Back up plan: If The water squirters do not work for any group of kids, you can do the same activity but substitute the water squirters for the sand bucket shovel to collect water and distribute it into each team's sand bucket.
Station 5: Ring Toss (2-1, 2-2 start here)
Volunteers: AM: Laura Benedict, Nikki Parkhill, Katie Lukas, James & Samantha Duncan
PM: Nikki Parkhill, Katie Lukas, James & Samantha Duncan, Ashlie Randall, Erica Perez-Duckworth
At this station students will have a partner and will be playing against another set of partners in a ring toss game. There will be a line of cones that the students will be trying to toss the rings on for points. To make this easier I would have each set of partners stand on the same side of the cone. The 2 students that they are playing will stand across from them on the opposite side of the cone facing each other. I will also have cones set up as a marker for how far away the students should stand. The students will take turns tossing the rings trying to land them on the cone to score points.
I have 4 different sized rings to choose from. I would recommend only using the two largest sized rings for the K, 1st, and 2nd grade students and either all of the sizes or just the two smallest sizes for the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. You can also assign different point values depending on the size of the ring that they land on the cone.
Station 6: Relay Races (2-3, 2-4 start here)
Volunteers: AM: Kelsey Craig, Amber Byers, Nicholas Nagle, Marissa Leitch, Joe Welker, Loni Thomas
PM: Anne Stewart, Amber Byers, Marissa Leitch, Joe Welker, Loni Thomas, Kristin Yoho
This station will consist of a few different relay race options. Start by putting students into 7 groups and have them line up behind the start cones. When doing relays I usually have the students who have already gone get back in line and sit down so you can see what team finishes first and what students have already gone.
Option #1: The students will take turns running down to the cone, running around the cone and back to the beginning. You can use the short pool noodles as track and field relay batons.
Option #2: The students will balance a small ball on a frisbee, run around the cone and back. If the ball falls off, they can simply pick it up and continue where they left off. Make sure kids are not holding the ball on the frisbee with their other hand. For older kids, have them do this activity with the lip of the frisbee facing down, and for younger kids have them hold the frisbee with the lip facing up.
Option #3: The students will balance a bean bag on their foot or arm (you choose) and run around the cone and back. If it falls off, once again they can pick it back up and continue where they left off. (no balancing on head due to lice)
Stations 7: Parachute (3-1, 3-2 start here)
Volunteers: AM: Tawnya Michael, Kai Wallace, Destiny Repasky, Julia Berry, Abtehal Alfahaid
PM: Beth Fulst, Kai Wallace, Allyson Daravongsouk, Sonny Marchette, Vicki Ross, Abtehal Alfahaid
Each student holds a side of the parachute. Please explain NO PULLING OR TUGGING on the parachute. There are also a few tears in the parachute, please make sure students do not hold on to those tears.- if they do they can sit out. Students can shake the parachute at different levels (low, medium, high), or different speeds. You can call out the color they are holding onto and have the students run under the parachute and come back to their spot. They can make a tent and sit on the inside of the parachute. You can also do “popcorn” where they are trying to shake the parachute and pop all the popcorn off of it or challenge them to see if they can launch all the balls off in one giant slingshot wave. You can also have them lift the parachute above their head and wave to their classmates underneath. The older kids will probably want to play a game called “shark attack”. Unfortunately that game can not be played on the grass.
This will be a good station to take a few breaks as they will get tired shaking the parachute.
I have 1 large parachute and 1 small.
Station 8: Partner Throw and Catch Distance Challenge (3-3, 3-4 start here)
Volunteers: AM: Brian & Lisa Croston, Cassie Langham, Mike Carnahan, Heather Westerfield, Mary Schneider
PM: Cassie Langham, Sarah Carnahan, Heather Westerfield, Kristy Williams, Amber Wytosick, Kiran Agrahami
This activity requires students to be with one partner. They will stand facing their partner, one standing lined up with the cones, and one standing inside of the hula hoop. All partners will start off very close together. The partner standing by the cones will start with the ball and will toss or throw the ball to the partner standing in the hula hoop. Every Time the student standing in the hula hoop catches the ball they get to flip the hoop back one time (meaning the hoop will now be one hula hoops length further away). They will repeat this process over and over again and will eventually be much further away, therefore becoming more difficult. If the student in the hoop does not catch the ball they do not get to flip the hoop. The student can stretch to catch the ball with one foot inside the hula hoop similar to a baseball/softball player keeping their foot on the base. The challenge is to try and make it as far as possible.
Watch for students who are not following the rules of the game. After 5 to 6 minutes have them switch roles with their partner and start over with the hula hoop at the beginning.
Station 9: Tug of War (4-1, 4-2 start here)
Volunteers: AM: Joe & Lindsey Hadaway, Kelly Krebs, Sarah Centric, Timothy Rober, Koreen Luckie
PM: Joe & Lindsey Hadaway, Sarah Centric, Timothy Rober, Amy McCluskey, Koreen Luckie
You can do class vs. class to see who wins. Make sure students use both hands when pulling the rope, emphasize no one pulls until the “go” signal is given. There is a sock tied to the middle of the rope, whichever class can pull the rope so that the sock passes their team's cone is the winner. Re-set and play again. You can also put together different teams.
Station 10: Soccer Darts (4-3, 4-4 start here)
Volunteers: AM: Tiffany Brooks, The Pennington’s, Angela West, Kevin Ziler, Nikki Husted, Kim Samaco
PM: Ashley Helmling, The Pennington’s, Kevin Ziler, Nikki Husted, Amanda Munnings, Bethany Seymour, Rachel Gardner
This station requires students to kick a soccer ball and attempt to land it on the target similar to the classic darts game. This game is not a race, just a friendly competition between students within each group. Split students into 6 even teams and have them line up behind the kicking cone. Students will take turns kicking and trying to land the ball on the target for points. The target will consist of 3 spray painted circles.Tell students that each circle is worth a different amount of points (ex. 1 point big circle, 2 points medium circle, 3 points small circle). Feel free to move the kicking cone closer or further away depending on the age group of the kids.
Station 11: Shark Squirt Tag (5-1, 5-2 start here)
Volunteers: AM: Jeremy Jones, Tonya Brabham, Michael Smetts, Jennifer Taube, Jessica Grad, Aubree and Christopher Uhler
PM: Avreen Singh Volunteer, Tonya Brabham, Jennifer Taube, Jessica Grad, Andrea Shaffer, Jade Boettler, Jessie Bishop
Pick about 10-12 taggers. They get a squirt shark. If they squirt someone with water (emphasize anywhere except in the face), that person has to do 5 jumping jacks and then they are back in. They can refill their squirt fish in any water bucket. You can also use the water buckets as the boundary to the game. Switch new taggers after a few minutes. To fill the shark make sure it is all the way under water and squeeze. Let go to let the shark fill with water.
When switching taggers you can call out freeze! Have students take some deep breaths to take a break. Have them nicely raise their hand if they want to be one of the next taggers.
I will also have some larger water squirters to use. Make sure students are using them correctly so they do not get damaged.
Station 12: Playground and popsicle (5-3, 5-4 start here)
Volunteers: AM: Norma Castellon, Sarah Paisley, Kimberly Hoffman, Amy Gay
PM: Michelle Russell, Kimberly Hoffman, Amy Gay, Julie Angelo, Taylor May
Play on the playground and enjoy a popsicle. Have students line up to get popsicles first.Try to get popsicles passed out as fast as possible. Please throw away wrappers before moving to the next station.
When done at station 12 the students will rotate to station 1.

PBIS CORNER
What is PBIS?
Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports is an important part of the school environment to encourage positive behavior. There are clear expectations throughout the school that are taught consistently throughout the year. The four expectations promoted at Field Local Schools are:
Safe
Outstanding
Accountable
Respectful
When students do not respond to teaching of the building or classroom expectations, we will view it as an opportunity for re-teaching, not just negative consequences. Students still receive consequences for negative behavior. The goal of the consequence is to teach students so they will not repeat the negative behavior.
