We are incredibly proud of each and every one of you for your hard work and dedication. A special thank you to those who were able to join us in person for the celebration! Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarships
Congratulations to our 5 Titans who earned scholarships from Coaches for Charity during the 2025 MLK Basketball Classic event!
The 2025 MLK Basketball Classic is sponsored by Tucson Unified School District and Coaches for Charity. Not only was this an opportunity for student basketball players, but students also had the chance to win a scholarship by writing an essay to Coaches for Charity about the impact MLK has had on their life. They addressed the prompt:
“What Martin Luther King Jr. Day Means to Me."
Coaches for Charity gave away six scholarships (each for $250) this year at the MLK Basketball Classic, and FIVE of the recipients were Palo Verde Titans! This is simply amazing and we are super proud of you all!
Congratulations to Mechack Mathumo, Rose Jacobo, Mavel Abetawoh, Nevaeh Nunez, and Rebecca Ornelas (was unable to attend)!
Titans Earn OSHA 10 Certification
We are incredibly proud of our Titans who recently earned their OSHA 10 General Industry safety certifications. Congratulations to the following students:
Jesse Garrett, Mechack Mathumo, Victoria Ngo, Tatum Owles, Aiden Bothwell, Isabelle Covarrubias Stigsell, Mario Eduardo Lopez (not pictured), Alyssa Norzagaray, Gabriel Sorensen (not pictured), Saul Soto, Kailah Thach, Eyezeya Villegas, Analeah Witt, Aiden Wortham, and Vincent Yanez.
These students completed 10 hours of rigorous safety training and successfully passed the final certification exam. Here’s a bit more about what they accomplished:
The OSHA 10-Hour General Industry course is designed to provide entry-level workers with essential knowledge on how to recognize, avoid, and prevent safety and health hazards in the workplace. It also covers workers' rights and employer responsibilities. This training equips individuals with the critical tools needed to ensure a safe working environment.
Upon successful completion of the CareerSafe OSHA 10-Hour General Industry course, students receive a U.S. Department of Labor OSHA 10-Hour General Industry card— a credential that will remain valuable throughout their careers.
Way to go, Titans! You’ve shown what it means to go the extra degree and embody the spirit of 212! We couldn’t be more proud of each and every one of you.
Basketball Tournament and Lunch for the Win!
We couldn’t be prouder of all our Titans who competed in the Ex-Ed Basketball Tournament! They played with determination, showed incredible sportsmanship, worked together as a team, and had an amazing time. Keep up the fantastic work, Titans! Way to be 212 and Go The Extra Degree!
In addition, a big shoutout and heartfelt thank you to Special Eats Food Truck for their incredible support of our Ex-Ed Basketball Tournament! They generously provided delicious meals to all the participants and coaches. The food was absolutely amazing, and the service was top-notch!

AVID Tucson Youth Leadership Academy
This semester, 20 of our AVID students will be participating in the Tucson Youth Leadership Academy so they can expand their leadership skills and further explore their career options. The Tucson Youth Leadership Academy is a partnership between Greater Tucson Leadership and the Pima County Superintendent’s Office to expand the leadership skills of high school students and develop career readiness. Students started off this opportunity by attending a day and a half retreat. In addition to attending workshops hosted here at Palo Verde, students will also have the opportunity to do job shadowing. We are so proud of our Titan Leaders! Way To Be 212 and Go The Extra Degree!

PV Performing Arts Awarded $10,000 Grant!
Palo Verde is incredibly proud of our Performing Arts teachers for their hard work in applying for the prestigious grant offered by the American Theatre Wing.
Now in its 9th year, the American Theatre Wing’s Andrew Lloyd Webber Initiative provides support for theatre education in underserved communities and under-resourced public schools across the United States. This initiative builds on the efforts of multi-Tony Award-winning composer and producer Andrew Lloyd Webber, who has long been dedicated to promoting and funding arts education through his Foundation in the United Kingdom. The initiative aims to nurture the next generation of theatre makers and patrons, expanding opportunities for young people across the nation.
This grant will directly fund essential resources for our Performing Arts program, enabling us to continue offering high-quality education and experiences for our students. We are deeply grateful to have such a talented and dedicated team of Fine Arts teachers here at Palo Verde!
Palo Verde Artists Visit Tucson Museum of Art
PV intermediate, advanced, and AP art students attended a fine arts field trip to the Tucson Museum of Art. 44 students worked with TMA Docents and PV staff to complete writing, critical thinking and art exercises in the galleries, to understand how art is a language that can transcend barriers, create community awareness, and communicate thoughts and ideas.
We look forward to opportunities that let our Titans shine in the community!
Jubileers Earn Superior Rating!
Our Jubileers visited Northern Arizona University (NAU) in Flagstaff to participate in the Jazz/Madrigal Festival. This is a huge festival in which over 100 choirs from all over the southwest United States participate. It is not a competition, but rather an opportunity for feedback from “Judges” who are professors at universities and colleges from across the country. Additionally, they receive a rating of Superior, Excellent, Good, or Fair based on the rubric which the judges use. This year, the Jubileers sang two classical songs for the Madrigal judge and two jazz songs for the Jazz judge. They earned the rating of Superior in BOTH.
Seven of these students are in band, 3 are athletes, 3 of them just finished participation in our theatre production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. All of them are working on our upcoming musical, four of them auditioned for and made it into the regional choir, and two have outside jobs! Despite their extreme schedules, they had the tenacity to stay involved with all of their activities (including academics) and commit and focus in learning their songs and being able to execute them in a superior way!
A huge congratulations to:
David Burgoyne
Hailey Campos
Alejandra Garcia
Abigail Maleck
Kyle Owles

We are so proud of you! Way to be 212 and go the extra degree!
A Midsummer Night's Dream
We are incredibly proud of our Titan Players for their outstanding performance of William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream! The acting was truly exceptional, the costumes were imaginative, and the play's theme of the whimsical side of love captivated the audience from start to finish. We’re fortunate to have such a talented and inspiring theater teacher, Mrs. Harris, who continues to foster creativity in our students. As a magnet school with a strong focus on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math), we take pride in going beyond the basics by integrating the ARTS into everything we do. Way to go, Titans—pushing beyond the ordinary, being 212, and going the extra degree! We couldn’t be more proud of you!
Blues in the Night - Arizona Theatre Company
Students from Palo Verde High School's Drama Classes recently attended the Arizona Theater Company’s student matinee performance of Blues in the Night at the Leo Rich Theater. This powerful production used Blues music to tell the story of four individuals living in a Chicago hotel, each grappling with significant changes in their lives. The entire performance was sung and featured engaging vignettes of each character, accompanied by a live band that interacted with the actors on stage.
During intermission, Mrs. Harris-Herchenroeder asked, "Is anyone enjoying this production?" The resounding response was a confident "YES!" with some students absolutely amazed, and others, passionate about music and theater, in awe of the magic unfolding on stage.
After the performance, the four actors stayed on stage to answer questions from the students, providing a unique opportunity for interaction. It was an unforgettable experience that truly brought our magnet school theme of STEAM to life!
Looking ahead, students will also attend the Pima Community College West production of The Wedding Singer later this month.
