November is one of my favorite months of the year where the temperature is finally where it is cool in the morning and beautiful during the day. The fall colors are in full swing and the time of year that is focused on family, gratitude, and caring is upon us. We have much to be grateful for here at Wilson Middle School. We have a wonderful and caring staff who are doing whatever it takes to make sure that your student’s academic and social/emotional needs are taken care of on a daily basis. We are grateful every day for the opportunity to work with all of them and we know your students are in good hands. We are thankful for the support of families and the community who are continually working to make our building a great place for students. And finally, we have incredible students, who challenge themselves every day as well as challenge us to become better people.

We are excited to announce that we will be bringing back the High Academic Honors for the 2023-2024 school year. Students who earn a cumulative GPA of 3.5 and higher with no failing grades on report cards through the end of 3rd quarter will be invited, along with their families, to the Raider High Academics program on May 21st from 6:00 - 7:00 pm. Students with a 4.0 GPA will receive special recognition.

Our school district will once again partner with Samaritan’s Wellness Screen Program to provide FREE and confidential mental wellness screening to students in 7, 9, & 11 grade levels throughout the 2023-2024 school year. Annual mental wellness check-ups are as important as annual physical check-ups and are a critical part of academic success. Early identification of mental health concerns allows for early intervention and higher success rates in resolving concerns. Wilson/Magellan will begin this screener on NOVEMBER 28 and will go through JANUARY 16.

The Appleton Area School District values input from our community – and we need to hear from your student! Students are important partners as we work to improve our communication, academic program, and overall experience for everyone.

In order to learn more about student experiences at school, we will be asking for your child’s feedback via an online survey they will be completing at school on November 2 and 3. The survey shouldn’t take more than 20-30 minutes to complete.

We are asking that all of our students participate in the surveys, as their feedback will provide invaluable insights into their experiences and how we can improve and adapt our district to their needs. If a student doesn’t feel like they have enough information to answer a question, they will be able to skip the item altogether. The responses to these surveys will be completely confidential. We are partnering with a third-party vendor to support us in administering these surveys.

The survey content will ask students to self-reflect on Effort in the classroom, Learning Strategies, Self-control, Social Awareness and Social Perspectives.

In collaboration with the Appleton Police Department and Outagamie County Youth and Family Services, AASD middle schools will be providing Attendance Education Lessons for students and their families beginning in November. Families may receive a letter as determined by the school site’s attendance team once their student reaches five unexcused absences. A student is considered habitually truant if they are absent from school without an excuse for part or all of five or more days on which school is held during a semester. With the letter, the family will be asked to attend a meeting with the school to develop a plan for attendance. Part of that plan will include a requirement for the student and family to participate in an Attendance Education Lesson, which will be held at each middle school monthly. Information will be shared and discussed regarding attendance requirements, state law, school obligations, the importance of attending school, and available resources to improve attendance.

Students are encouraged to work on iReady lessons outside of school. As a staff, we are utilizing the data to assist in planning for our daily instruction to focus on the areas of greatest needs for our students. Please connect with your student's Raider Time teacher if you would like updates on your student's progress.

Fall iReady Scores will be sent home on Monday, November 6th.

If your student is out of school for any reason, they can be working on their iReady lessons.

Starting November 7, students will be sorted into Wilson Workshop Growth Groups or Intervention Groups. Students in specific intervention groups based on their iReady Scores, teacher recommendations, and previous assessment data will have tailored support in the areas of Reading, Math, or Reading and Math during Raider Time 3 days a week. If your student is in an intervention group, you will be connected with directly by the teacher running the intervention. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to reach out.

PATH stands for Providing Access to Healing and is designed to provide mental health therapy in schools for those students experiencing barriers to care at community-based clinics. Our PATH therapist works in conjunction with Catalpa Health and is in our building on Tuesdays. There aren't many spots left in this program, so if you are interested, connect with our School Counselor, Crystal Schroeder, right away at schroedercryst@aasd.k12.wi.us Once spots are filled, students will be placed on the waitlist in the event a spot opens up, or they will be referred to the Catalpa clinic. At this time we do have a waiting list but we can continue to submit referrals.
