Raymond Central Public Schools
October 2024
From the Desk of the Superintendent...
Dear Raymond Central Community,
As we move towards the end of the first quarter, I want to take a moment to reflect on
the amazing start we've had.
Homecoming Week was a tremendous success; our secondary students had a great
time participating in all of the planned activities culminating in the Homecoming Dance
of Saturday Night. We loved having such a large crowd and seeing our communities
come together to support our students at the football game on Friday.
Academically, we have finished our first round of testing and will be working with this
data to make educational decisions that will have a positive impact on our students. I
have had the privilege to visit every classroom in the district, most of them multiple
times, and have been thoroughly impressed with the work that our educators are doing
with our students.
Fall activities are in full swing, and I highly recommend that you come see our students
in action. The schedule of activities can be found on our website,
https://www.rcentral.org/events, and your continued support means so much to our
students.
I plan on hosting another Raymond Central Listening Session on Friday, October 11th , at
5:00 in the Mustang Room. Please join us as we discuss the amazing things that we
have happening in the district and work together to improve the academic experience
for all of our students. Please be on the lookout for other opportunities to visit each
school.
Lastly, a reminder that our Fall Parent-Teacher Conferences are coming up on October
17 th from 12:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This is a great opportunity to partner with your child’s
teachers to help us ensure they are making progress towards their academic goals.
Thank you for your continued support of the Raymond Central School District, our staff
and students. We look forward to partnering with parents and community members, to
help us be the best that we can be for all of our students.

ELEMENTARY NEWS/UPDATES
October Fire Safety Day
Raymond Central Elementary students from both sites will embark on an exciting field trip to the Valparaiso Rural Fire Department on Thursday, October 10, for a hands-on learning experience about fire safety. Students in grades 3-5 will attend the fire safety session in the morning, and students in grades K-2 will have their turn in the afternoon. The event, hosted by fire personnel from Valparaiso, Ceresco, and Raymond, will allow students to use a fire hose, try on gear, and learn safety procedures in case of a fire.
In addition, all elementary students will participate in a coin war from October 7 to 9. This drive has a twist: Nickels, dimes, and quarters are counted positively toward a class total. Pennies and paper money are counted negatively toward a class total. Pennies and paper money can be deposited into another class account! All money raised by the students in the coin drive will be given to the Valparaiso Rural Fire Department to purchase equipment for the new ambulance.
Look for updated pictures in the November newsletter! For now, enjoy some THROWBACK FIRE SAFETY photos of our current senior class! Do you recognize any of these adorable faces?
Mustang Reading Challenge!
One of our Elementary School Improvement goals is to increase fluency scores. To achieve this goal, we are encouraging students to read outside of school hours. In September, the elementary schools launched the “Mustang Reading Challenge” for all students. Each student received a bookmark with ten circles to fill in. Students in grades K-2 could fill in one circle for every book they read or had read to them, while students in grades 3-5 could fill in a circle for every fifteen minutes of reading. Students could return the bookmark anytime during the month and exchange it for another. All completed bookmarks were placed in a bowl for a prize drawing—the more a student read, the higher their chances of winning.
We were blown away by how much the students participated in this fun challenge! Students in grades K-2 read a combined total of 1,970 books, and students in grades 3-5 read for a combined total of 18,600 minutes. AMAZING! Thank you to all the families who encouraged their children to read. We hope this will inspire a love of reading for fun outside of school among our students.

We Are In This Together
Greetings Mustang Faithful,
October has muscled its way to us already and I can’t believe that we are about ready to celebrate the completion of the end of the first quarter of school. Friday, October 11 is the end of our first quarter. We will be hosting parent-teacher conferences on Thursday, October 17 from 12:30 PM to 7:30 PM. Please make plans to join us for conversations about your student’s progress this year. There are a lot of great things to talk about.
Our students and staff continue to create a dynamic partnership where their collaborative efforts are helping Raymond Central students realize their true potential. Although we all have potential, I often tell our educational family that it's about what we expect that matters. We expect to get better this year in all that we do and it is showing. Look no farther than the performances of our extra-curricular and you can see this on full display. This is occurring in the classrooms too.
Lifelong memories are being built through school activities and the manner in which the classrooms are operating is impressive. NSCAS testing is behind us and indications are that our students gave a very solid effort. At Raymond Central we take pride in who we are and what we do. Take the time to visit our school website and see for yourself some of the snapshots being shared. Our students and staff are everywhere. Mustang pride is on the rise. #MustangMentality, #MustangNation, #MyRCstory
Have a great October everyone!
Educationally,
Mr. Lurz, Principal
