Opening Day 2024-2025...
Our Opening Day Event was a huge success! Held at Valley View High School, on August 22, 2024, we had a day full of motivational speaking, treats, department meetings and positivity. Welcome remarks were made by Dr. Kathleen Sottile and Dr. Marc Wyandt, superintendent of Lakeland School District. Dr. Mike McGough was keynote speaker and spoke on teacher empowerment, personal leadership, accessibility, reliability and commitment and taking care of yourself. All departments met individually to discuss Year One of the Strategic Plan and to strategize for Year Two. It was a great start to our 2024-2025 School Year. As Dr. McGough stated "words matter, words carry meaning." A simple reminder for every day life.
BACK TO SCHOOL:
Shown are pictures of students and staff on their first day back for the 2024-2025 school year. The smiles and fun activities seen below look like it was a great and welcoming day!
"Love life. Engage in it. Give it all you've got. Love it with a passion because life truly does give back, many times over, what you put into it."
~Maya Angelou
A Note from Dr. Sottile...
As we kick off a new school year, I want to take a moment to reflect on the important work we do here at NEIU 19. Each year brings fresh opportunities, new challenges, and the promise of growth not just for our students and the districts we serve, but for all of us as educators, leaders, and vital contributors within this incredible organization.
This year, I want to emphasize the significance of feeling empowered in your roles. Whether you’re working directly with students in Special Education, supporting our youngest learners through Early Intervention, providing Educational Programs and Services, Training and Consultation to districts, leading STEM and Technology initiatives, guiding students through Transition programs, contributing to our Print Shop and other educational services, supporting our operations as part of the Business and Clerical staff, or maintaining the facilities that keep us running smoothly—each of you plays an essential role.
As Steven Covey so wisely put it, "Leadership is communicating people's worth and potential so clearly that they come to see it in themselves." This quote perfectly encapsulates the essence of what we strive to do at NEIU.
For those of you working in Special Education, including our itinerate staff, your role is nothing short of transformative. You’re not just teaching; you’re advocating for students who require individualized support, helping them to see and reach their full potential. Every day, you empower these students to overcome challenges and embrace their strengths, playing a crucial role in their educational journey.
In Early Intervention, your work with our youngest learners lays the foundation for their future success. You have the unique opportunity to make a lasting impact at a critical stage in their development, empowering them and their families to envision a bright and hopeful future.
For our colleagues in Curriculum, TaC, and Act 89, you are the bridge between best practices and practical application. Your leadership empowers districts to implement innovative solutions, ensuring that educators across our region have the tools and confidence they need to support their students effectively.
In our STEM and Technology programs, you are at the forefront of preparing students for the future. You inspire curiosity, creativity, and a love for learning in fields that are crucial to our rapidly evolving world. Your leadership in STEM and technology education not only empowers students but also positions them to be leaders in tomorrow’s workforce.
For those working in our Transition programs, you play a vital role in guiding students as they prepare to move from school to the next phase of their lives. Your work helps them build the skills and confidence they need to succeed, whether that’s in further education, employment, or independent living.
For those of you supporting our print shop and other educational services, your work behind the scenes is essential to our collective success. You empower our organization by ensuring that we have the resources and materials needed to operate smoothly and efficiently.
To our dedicated clerical, transportation, PIMS and business staff—your leadership is the backbone of NEIU. Your work ensures that every process runs smoothly, every document is in place, and every communication is clear. You are often the first point of contact for many, and the way you carry out your responsibilities reflects the professionalism and excellence of our entire organization. Your role is critical in empowering others to succeed, and your contributions are deeply valued.
To our maintenance team—your leadership is the foundation upon which all our work is built. The safe, clean, and welcoming environment you create is crucial to our success. Your tireless efforts ensure that every classroom, office, and facility is a space where learning and collaboration can thrive. You empower all of us by maintaining the spaces where we educate, support, and grow.
But beyond these roles, I want to stress the importance of personal leadership. Each of us, regardless of our position, has the capacity to lead. Personal leadership is about taking ownership of your actions, decisions, and growth. It’s about setting an example for others, demonstrating integrity, and being proactive in seeking solutions. When you embrace personal leadership, you not only elevate yourself but also inspire those around you to do the same.
There is an old adage you may have heard; “listen twice as much as you talk", which is particularly relevant to leadership because it emphasizes the importance of active listening and understanding in effective leadership. For leaders, this approach can foster stronger relationships, create a more inclusive environment, and lead to better decision-making.
In essence, the adage reinforces the idea that leadership is not just about directing others but also about understanding, empathizing, and empowering those around you.
As we move forward into this school year, I want you all to remember that empowerment is not just something we offer to others—it’s something we must also cultivate within ourselves. When you feel empowered, you lead with confidence, creativity, and compassion. And it’s our responsibility as a community to ensure that you have the support, recognition, and resources you need to feel that empowerment every day.
So, as we start this school year, let’s commit to creating an environment where every team member at NEIU feels empowered to be their best. Let’s lead by example, showing our students, colleagues, and partners that their worth and potential are limitless.
Thank you for your unwavering dedication, your leadership, and for the countless ways you will make a difference this year. Here’s to a successful and inspiring school year ahead—one where we all grow, learn, and lead together.
