Huge Shoutout to Ms. Newberger
South Charlotte is a CHAMPIONS GRANT recipient. Ms. Lisa Newburger applied for the grant and SCMS received it. The money acquired through the grant will be used for library enhancements to include a BOOK vending machine! SCMS will receive $34, 333.00 within the next few days. Thank you, Mrs. Newburger for writing this grant and for all of the great things you do for SCMS students.
Shocker Standouts ✨
Counselor's Corner
Did you know that course selection for the 25-26 school year is beginning now? It seems early to start thinking about what your students may want to take next year, but due to the switch to Infinite Campus next year (instead of PowerSchool), we need to start the process now.
Here are some important things to note about course selection:
- This Tuesday, 1/14 at 6:30pm there will be a Rising 7th and 8th Grade Parent Night with Information on Course Selection for the 25-26 school year (for current 6th and 7th grade families) at SCMS. Please join us to learn all about the process and ask any questions you have!
- 1/15 – 1/22 is when rising 7th and 8th graders and their families will go online on our website and register for classes. There is a two step process to do this – fill out a google form, and put classes into PowerSchool. Students will only be selecting their elective courses for next year.
- In mid-February, students will be placed in ELA and Math based on their data. Parents will be sent an override form to fill out if you want your student placed in a different course than the data suggests.
- These override forms for rising 7th and 8th graders will be due on March 1st.
- Rising 9th graders who are going to Providence High School were given their course registration card last Thursday and will turn it into their HR teachers on 1/16.
- On 1/22 PHS counselors will be at SCMS to register students and answer any questions they have about classes.
- Rising 9th graders who will be going to Ballantyne Ridge High School – your registration will be similar but not start until the end of January – those dates will be published soon.
- Rising 6th grade registration (for current 5th graders) will start on February 10th. More information will be coming soon.
Please reach out to your counselor with any questions as we work to get students placed into classes for next year!

Rising 9th Graders
ATTENTION Parents of Rising 9th graders who will attend Providence High School
Providence High School will host “Panthers on the Prowl” for rising 9th graders and their parents on Thursday, March 13th at 6:30pm in the PHS auditorium. “Panthers on the Prowl” is an orientation to Providence which will provide information about the differences between middle school and high school, specific curriculum highlights for 9th graders, a look at electives that students may want to consider, as well as an opportunity to explore clubs, sports, and fine arts extra-curricular options. The program will begin promptly at 6:30pm with a meeting in the auditorium. Please arrive a few minutes early so you can park and be in the auditorium by 6:30pm. The event will conclude at 8:30pm. This is the first opportunity to begin the exciting transition to Providence High School. You don’t want to miss it!
At “Panthers on the Prowl” we will discuss the last chance opportunity for your rising 9th grader to make any changes to their course request card for next year. Forms for “Last Chance Day” will be available on our website and are due to the main office at Providence by 3:00pm on Tuesday, March 18th.
The PHS Auditorium is most easily accessed by entering our campus at the stop light. Proceed straight into the Student Parking Lot (beside the Guard House). The auditorium is on your left as you enter the Student Parking Lot.
SCMS Boys Club Tennis 🎾
Spring 2025 South Charlotte Middle School Boys Club Tennis
SCMS is once again planning on having a Boys’ Club Tennis Team this Spring. As of right now, we are still working with Raintree Country Club to coordinate a practice schedule. However, the season will likely begin on or about Monday, February 24th, and end no later than Friday, May 2nd. More details, including the estimated participation fees (prior year’s fees were approximately $380 per player), will be shared in late-December.
Tennis matches with other area middle schools are also still being scheduled, and more details will be shared by mid-January. The current plan would be for the boys to have approximately 14 practices (i.e., two practices per week over a seven-week period) at Raintree Country Club and approximately 8-10 matches with other area middle schools. However, the final practice and match schedules will ultimately be dependent on weather, other teams’ schedules, and court availability.
Players at all skill levels are welcome to participate. However, players will be required to know how to keep score in order to be able to play in matches. In addition, it is recommended (but not required) that players be able to serve a tennis ball into the “service box” on the opposite side of the net before being able to participate in matches. Clinics may be offered at Raintree to help players that are new to the sport of tennis get some practice in this aspect of the game prior to the start of the season. More details about this option will be made available in late-December.
This season, Vishu and Chad Cook will be serving as parent-coaches for the boys’ tennis team. Please stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks. In the meantime, if you are interested in registering, please e-mail Vishu at vishwanthini@gmail.com and copy Chad at cookchad1975@yahoo.com. No fees will be due until one week prior to the start of the season. However, please note that the last day to register will be Monday, January 27th, in order to ensure adequate time to order t-shirts for the boys before the season begins.
