Note from Dr. Mullenschlader
Back in September, we completed standardized testing for the year. The individual student data from Standardized testing information will be coming home next week. I put together a bit of a narrative about the data we receive from the Iowa Assessments and how we use the data. We are always encouraged by the improvement of the academic performance of our students. Each year, we find ways to grow our academic stature and challenge the intellect of all learners at St. Charles Borromeo, helping to create an intelligent and competent child who is an active member our school.
As we close in on Fall Break, there are a couple of items of note.
- We are not in school for All Saints Day. This is a Solemnity and Holy Day of Obligation. There are plenty of opportunities to attend Mass. Here are the Mass times for November 1: 6:30am @ St. Peters, 8:00am @ St. Charles Borromeo, 12:00pm @ St. Peters, 7:00pm @ St. Charles Borromeo
- November 10 is going to be a special Veteran's Day Mass and Honor Ceremony. November 17th will be our next Virtue Mass recognizing the virtue of generosity.
Have a blessed weekend!
Standardized Testing Information
The most useful data points for parents from the results of standardized testing are the Predicted National Percentile Rank (PNPR) and the National Percentile Rank (NPR). The Predicted National Percentile Rank is a number that reflects the predicted achievement on the Iowa Assessments based on the Cognitive Abilities test. The National Percentile Rank (NPR) is number that reflects how a test taker compares to other test takers of the same age and grade level. The numbers that are used to compare the test takers are known as the Standard Score (SS). We look at the SS each year to measure natural academic growth in a child. For a better understanding of what the percentile means, a score in the 50%ile is average and in the the middle quartile.
The Iowa Assessment is a general norm-referenced test and the questions are not based on our own curriculum. Every school in the archdiocese takes the same test, but the results form one school to another are not comparable. We utilize our data to understand growth from year to year, identify areas of deficiency based on the testing questions, and individual performance comparison to measure normal academic growth.
One very important note on the results from the standardize testing is they are only one piece of the academic puzzle of a child. We have more accurate data that we utilize with greater effectiveness that includes AIMSweb, classroom assignments and assessments, and teacher observations. The data that we receive from those sources is criteria-based and provides us a more accurate portrait of a child's academic performance. If you have any questions about the data, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Virtue of the Month - Generosity
Generosity is giving of oneself in a willing and cheerful manner for the good of others
St. Martin of Tours was riding through a city on his horse when he saw a beggar on the side of the road. The beggar had on very little clothes. Martin took off his military cloak and cut it in half. He gave half to the cloak to the beggar to keep warm with. That night Martin had a dream where he saw Jesus wearing the half of cloak he gave to the beggar. Jesus then thanked Martin for being so generous.
adapted from the Disciples of Christ: Education in Virtue
Here is a prayer for the children to say at home: Dear Jesus, Let me share myself with others as You share Your life with me.
Scriptures to read on Generosity: Luke 6:38, Luke 21:1-4, 2 Corinthians 9:6-8, Philippians 2:4
Veteran's Day Celebration
We will be honoring the family members of students that are Veteran's on November 10. The celebration will begin with Mass at 8:00 am. We ask that the Veteran family members and the students (of the family members) sit up front at Mass. Following the Mass will be a Veteran speaker, a brief celebration of songs honoring them, and a simple breakfast in the Café for the Veteran and their student(s). The celebration should end by 10:00 am. We ask that only Veteran family members attend and not close friends of family. If you have a Veteran that will be attending with your student, please fill out this form by Friday, October 27. https://forms.gle/apm4tKPkat26F6DL7 . The Veteran will need to be at church around 7:50-7:55 to meet their student.
