Learn to Play the Recorder
Or "How Not to be Driven Crazy by Your Fourth Grader"
Yellow Belt - "Boat Song" (Deadline is Wednesday, Nov 2)
boat song
In-class Grading Days - Yellow Belt
- Oct 27 (day 1) - Mrs. Jones's class
- Nov 1(day 3) - Mrs. Garriga's class
- Nov 2 (day 4) - Mrs. Toth's class
The Process
1. Learn the song in class
Each graded song is a representation of concepts that we have been learning over several classes. The graded songs are assigned so that the children gain music independence and demonstrate understanding and skill.
2. Practice at home along with the video
Each song will have a practice video. The videos are about 10 minutes long. They review the concepts and show step by step how to play the song. The children will have around two weeks to practice.
3. Play the song for a grade by the deadline.
There are three ways your fourth grader can earn a grade for successfully learning the song.
- Come before school to play the song; email Ms. West to reserve a spot
- Make a video using your phone or computer and email the video to Ms. West; sometimes the video attachments are too large so you might have to upload to cloud sites like Google Drive or Dropbox then email the link.
- Play the song during music class on the test day.
The students can play the song for a grade many times without penalty before the deadline either before school or by video. I will record the highest score earned. We will only use one music class to grade.
