The amygdala determines emotional responses by classifying incoming sights, sounds, smells, and movements as either potentially threatening or pleasurable. Input deemed pleasurable goes on to the prefrontal cortex where it is analyzed before it is responded to. Input perceived as threatening is blocked by the amygdala and instead prompts an immediate reflexive reaction - fight, flight, or freeze.

Unmindful thoughts and actions occur when the gate-keeper amygdala blocks the flow of sensory input to the prefrontal cortex and unconsciously reacts.
