New Health and Sex Education Standards
Hello D103 Community,
The State of Illinois has adopted the National Sex Education Standards for Illinois schools. The Illinois standards are called The Illinois Learning Standards for Comprehensive Personal Health and Safety and Sexual Health Education. School districts that teach sex education are required to use the new standards for instruction. District 103 has a sex education curriculum for grades 6-8 and will now use the National Sex Education Standards to modify the curriculum. The new standards are created for grades K-8, however, District 103 only teaches sex education in grades 6-8. The curriculum using the new standards will not be taught in grades K-5.
The Illinois State Board of Education will provide resources for districts to use in the creation of the curriculum. These resources are expected to be made available to districts by August 1, 2022. Once created, the district will revise the curriculum and make it available to parents for their review. Additional information regarding the new standards and process can be found on the Illinois State Board of Education website.
Understanding that some families wish to have sex education taught at home, parents may choose to opt-out of sex education at school for their children. A form will be sent to parents before the unit is taught so parents can notify the school of their decision.
Please watch for additional information from the district as we modify our curriculum to align with the new State standards.
Sincerely,
Scott Warren, Ed.D
