Message from Jennifer

It's hard to believe that we are coming to the end of September and entering into the 7th week of school! We continue our work to build strong classroom communities, learn routines and build our knowledge of the 7 Habits. Your children have done an incredible job!


Talking to our children about school gives us a window into their daily experiences. Here are

10 ways to ask your children about their day at school:


1. Tell me about the best part of your day.

2. What was the hardest thing you had to do today?

3. Did anything funny happen today?

4. What questions did you ask at school today?

5. Who did you play with today? What did you play?

6. What subject has been challenging for you so far?

7. How were you kind today?

8. What special did you have today and what did you do there?

9. Can you show me something you learned (or did) today?

10. What are you looking forward to tomorrow?

Safety Concerns

Parents, I need your help with two safety issues.


1. THE STAFF LOT IS FOR STAFF ONLY. Entering the lot to drop of students, turn around, wait for pick up is prohibited as it is extremely dangerous. Please, do not enter the staff lot during drop-off and pick-up.


2. Do not park in the 3 minute loading zone outside of the school. Parking enforcement issued tickets last week and will continue to do so. We had this signage changed so parents can pull up, let their students out safely, and drive away. Leaving this zone open will alleviate congestion and more importantly, keep our students safe.


I appreciate your help with these matters.

ENROLLMENT OPTIONS SCHOOL CHOICE WINDOW OPENING

The Priority Choice Application Window for the 2025-2026 school year will open Monday, September 23, 2024 and closes on Monday, November 4, 2024. Remember it is not on a first come, first served basis. A lottery will be conducted in January 2025 with email notifications following soon after.

Student Contracts

We can approve contracts for students that will be out for extended periods between 3-14 days. Contracts must be requested at least two weeks in advance to give teachers adequate time to gather the necessary work for students to complete. Contracts requested less than two weeks in advance will not be approved.


All work completed for a contract must be turned in no later than one week upon the student's return to school.

LCFF DATA COLLECTION FOR 2024-25 VIA PARENT PORTAL

The LCFF Form is available in the PowerSchool Parent Portal (https://powerschool.sandi.net) for all SDUSD schools. Please note that parents cannot access the form when logged in with a student account. Parents must use their own portal accounts to log in and submit the LCFF Form. Job aids are available in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese to help parents complete this from.

Please submit this form by 9/30/24. If you need help setting up your parent portal account or need your students ID number please contact sunselm@sandi.net.

Leader in Me

Habit 1: Be Proactive

This week's focus is all about emotions. Talk with your kids about what some examples of emotions are (happy, sad, angry, surprised, scared, disappointed, etc) and give examples of when they may feel these emotions. Talk about ways to respond to how they are feeling. Use the calming cards (take a break, ask for help, exercise, use senses) as examples of what to do when you want to calm down; then come up with ideas together and create those cards as well.

Friendly Reminders

Please bring in a Picture for Our Community Bulletin Board!

Please bring in a picture of your family to add to our community bulletin board! Pictures can be sent to your child's classroom teacher and we will take care of the rest.

Attendance

Please do not send your child to school when they are sick.


When your child must be absent for any reason, please call the office at 858-988-2000 by 9:30 a.m. every day of non-attendance, giving the exact reason for the absence. You can also email sunselm@sandi.net.


Any child arriving after 9:00 a.m. must stop in the office and pick up a tardy slip. Let's set good habits early in the school year to arrive on time.

Parking

We have very limited parking around Sunset View Elementary. The front of the school is now a 3 minute loading zone. Please be kind to our neighbors by keeping their driveways open and free. The staff parking lot is only for staff and we kindly request that you do not enter the lot. We also strongly encourage you to model good habits for your children by using the crosswalks. Running across Hill St. in front of the school and/or having children exit cars in the middle of the street is dangerous. Please pass this important message along to anyone who may be picking up your children (grandparents, child care provider, etc.). Your child's safety is always top priority and never an inconvenience. We appreciate your help.

Cell phones/smart watches:

Cell phones and smart watches should be "Off and Away" during school hours. Of course, many families want their children to carry smart devices for safety reasons, and we understand that. Just note that students should not be using their devices during school hours. This includes calls or texts home. We ask that students use classroom, main office, or health office phones for communication home. We ask parents to contact the school directly if you need to contact your child. Student cell phones should be turned off and should be stored in their backpacks (not their pockets). Smart watches are allowed but also can be a very significant distraction to learning. If using the smart watch like a cell phone becomes a problem, we will request individual students to refrain from wearing smart watches.

NO DOGS ALLOWED ON CAMPUS

Although we love your pets, they are not allowed on campus. Please do not bring pets past the school gates. Please see the district policy below.


Policy Reminder - Animals on Campus

- Animals are permitted at school only when needed for the instructional program and when

under the strict control of qualified instructors or handlers.

-Animals must be obtained from a reliable source and have written certifications that

they are in good health and are not carriers of dangerous disease-causing organisms.

- Hamsters, white rats, black widow spiders, rattlesnakes, and banded psittacine

(parrot-like) birds are too dangerous to have at school.

-Therapy and Service Dogs are allowed with proper certification.

Pets at school: Domestic pets shall not be allowed in classrooms, on or around campus.
