Hedgcoxe Library
May/Summer 2024
All Library Books Were Due on Friday, May 10th!
All student library books were due back to the Hedgcoxe Library by Friday, May 10th. If you continue to receive communication from me or from the district that your student still has books checked out, then please help him/her to look for and return any overdue books before the last day of school. If a book cannot be located, then contact Mrs. Berry at karen.berry@pisd.edu for payment information. (Lost or damaged books must be paid for; we can no longer accept replacement books in lieu of payment.) The good news is that if you pay for a book and then find it over the summer, a full refund can be arranged if the book is returned in good condition within the first two weeks of the next school year.
PLEASE NOTE: If your 5th grader has books that cannot be found, their account still needs to be reconciled by the end of the school year so he/she will be able to check out books in middle school.
SUMMER READING: Avoid the Summer Slide!
I wish everyone an amazing summer full of wonderful, memory-making moments. Please do encourage your children to READ as often as they can throughout the summer months! (If you'd like to know more information about the reality of "summer slide," you can check out an informative and helpful article from Scholastic HERE.)
Many local businesses sponsor summer reading programs to help give your students incentives for reading all summer long. You can also take advantage of the many summer offerings from the Plano Public Libraries, which are detailed for you HERE.
Before we know it, it'll be time once again to have Meet the Teacher and recruit library volunteers for the fall. All PISD libraries will be getting a new library system in the fall, and I look forward to learning all about that with all of you. Thank you so much for your support of the Hedgcoxe Library.
Happy Summer, and Happy Reading!

2023-2024 Texas 2x2 and Bluebonnet Readers
At the beginning of the school year, Mrs. Berry made available reading logs for the Texas 2x2 Reading Program (for K-2nd students) and the Bluebonnet Reading Program (for 3rd-5th students). Dozens of students school-wide read books from both reading lists, and I'm so proud of each one of them! Below are the students who completed and turned in their reading logs by the indicated due dates:
2x2 READERS:
Kinder- Autumn Anderson, Hanna Berglund, Daisy Gosnell, Kaeden Sams, Sloane Smith, Parker Thomason, Emma Wood, and Everly Wood
1st grade- Karl Berglund, Camille Brassette, Khansa Sadaf, Ethan Smith, Peter Stout, Noah Sturm, and Carter Weldon
2nd grade- Kumail Bootwalla, Aaron Gosnell, Cayde Green, Keira Guei, Elle Olschewsky, and Kayleigh Slater
BLUEBONNET READERS:
3rd grade- Aurora Chen, Gabby Russo, and Jonah Myers
4th grade- Katelyn Burgos, Alex Hristov, Sehrish Kamal, and Abdul Kareem Mohammed
5th grade- Amelia Baskharoon, Belle Chen, and Mio Toyama
The Bluebonnet Readers were honored at a special breakfast with Mrs. Berry in April.
The 2x2 Readers will receive recognition and a prize from Mrs. Berry in mid-May.
The 2024-2025 2x2 and Bluebonnet reading lists are already available (see links below), and the public libraries do have those books in case your students would like to get a head start on reading titles from the lists this summer. Every student will receive reading logs for the new school year during library classes when school resumes in August.

Library Volunteers
I would be remiss not to mention that the Hedgcoxe Library has the most amazing volunteers! Thank you so much to each and every one of the amazing parents and community members who showed up week after week, rain or shine, to help our students check out books and to shelve hundreds of books every week. YOU make all the difference!
