Kia Ora Chelsea Whānau,
It is starting to get chilly around here and we have seen rising levels of our usual winter coughs and colds but also with a good dose of Covid-19 too. Just a gentle reminder to please keep your child home from school if they are sick, it really does help to stop the spread of germs across our students and staff.
Sports
Last week I was lucky enough to head along and watch two of our Chelsea basketball teams play against each other. I was so proud of the Chelsea Wildcats and the Chelsea Celtics who both gave it their all! It was awesome to see the friendly competition amongst the parents too - thank you so much for coaching, managing and supporting our teams, it is people like you who ensure our learners can have these experiences. I’d love to watch more of our teams play and I know other staff members would too, so feel free to share your game times with us and if we can be there, we will!
Trivia Night
Trivia Night 2024 - Television is just a few weeks away. Our PTA has collected over $12,000 worth of donations which will be auctioned both on the night and in our Online Auction which will be going live Friday 14th June. Keep an eye out for instructions coming home next week on how to create an account and bid.
Mobility Parking
Our Mobility Carparks located in our staff carpark are for Mobility Parking Permit holders only. Please do not park or stop to offload or pick-up your child/ren in these parks if you do not hold a permit. These enable our whānau members who hold these permits to easily access our school for drop off and pick up. Thank you for your support with this.
Teacher Only Day
Thank you so much for supporting us by keeping your tamariki home on Friday so that we could attend our first Te Ara Whetū Kāhui Ako Conference day. We are so lucky to have Tracey Notely (Māhuri Hub 1) as an Across School Teacher in our Te Ara Whetū so she played a huge role in making this day a resounding success. Thank you Tracey for your amazing mahi in this area!
Unsure about what a Kāhui Ako is? It is a community of schools who come together to help all students realise their potential! What is more magical than lots of amazing teachers working together and spreading their expertise and experience?! It opens up incredible opportunities for all schools so that our learners can thrive.
Ngā mihi nui,

Anxiety Evening
Te Reo
On Friday, our staff attended the first Te Ara Whetū Kahui Ako conference. The keynote speaker was Brenda McPherson, who spoke about the importance of creating and encouraging a bi-cultural space. Although Chelsea is a multi-cultural school, supporting our Te Reo development is important for ensuring that a language (Māori) unique to New Zealand has a chance to thrive. She quoted Kelvin Davis' Waitangi speech from 2022- the full article is linked here if you'd like to read it! https://www.labour.org.nz/news-waitangi_day_2022. As kaiako (teachers), tumuaki (principals) and kaiawhina (support staff) we were challenged to think about how far across the bridge we were in terms of our own language journey. It's something I'm now thinking of for these segments- how to support and encourage us as a whānau to become more confident speaking and using Te Reo in everyday settings. Watch this space!

Matariki Celebration - Soup Evening
Wednesday 26th June, 5-7pm
Soup will be served on the top courts following karakia kai at 5pm. Kapa Haka will be performing from 6pm on the bottom courts by the hall.
More details to come in a separate Hero post!
Weeding Bee!
Road Crossing
Just a quick message to inform you that there may be times when our school crossings will not have our road patrollers on duty. With winter ills and chills we are finding it difficult to always arrange cover when road patrollers are away.
Team Updates
Kākano
We are looking forward to a few events here in Kākano- our cross country on Thursday, wearing our pyjamas to school on Friday and our Matariki Soup Evening! We also have our New Entrant Parent morning on Friday- but you don't have to wear your pyjamas! Please sign in at the office and make your way to the staffroom- we will begin at 9am.
Hub 2 are planning to make soup as a class for our Matariki Evening- if you would like to donate a carrot, kumara or other 'soup suitable' vegetable, we'd love to include it- last year we made a tasty carrot soup and an 'everything else' soup! Vegetables can be brought in on Wednesday 26th- if we end up postponing, we will make and freeze the soup.
Pakiaka
Half way through Term 2 already!
Good luck to our runners for cross country tomorrow! We know you will give it your all and show all your hard work.
Make sure to rock your PJs on Friday! We would appreciate a gold coin donation on the day if you cannot donate a pair of PJs or blankets.
In week 7, Pakiaka Hub 1 will be running our assembly, we would love to see you there!
We will also be sending home your child's choice of Poetry to practice for our Poetry recital in week 2 of term 3. Please encourage your child to practice regularly to feel prepared for the day.
Māhuri
It has been awesome watching the progress of the cross country training. Māhuri students are certainly up for a challenge and ready for tomorrow! We are sure to see some great effort and some Chelsea DNA and values in action.
Year 6 students, please remember to bring your baking for the bake sale, which will be held at lunchtime. Remember to bring a gold coin as well, to buy some of the delicious baking.
We also hope to put our up for a challenge attitude to the test in two weeks time, during our Cycle Skills Training Day. Information and a permission slip for this event has been sent home. Please return these to your classroom teachers ASAP. Māhuri hub 1 cycle day will be on 17th of June and hub 2 will be on the 18th of June.
As per a message that recently went out on Hero: On Monday 17th June at 6.00pm, there will be a whanau information evening (via Zoom) facilitated by NEST Consulting who will be delivering the 'Positive Puberty Plus' programme to our Year 6 learners (Wednesday 19th June at school).
Desperately Seeking a Bar Tender
The PTA are still in desperate need of 2 more bartenders for Trivia Night. We need 2 people who can help on Saturday 22 June from 6.30pm to close which could be anywhere from 10.30 - 11.30pm depending on how long the quiz runs.
If you can help, please contact Krystal at pta@chelsea.school.nz
