JUNIORS
This is an important year for Juniors. Ensure to have a great focus on your academic courses and do well. Next year, when you apply for colleges, they will look for your junior year grades as they are the most recent with a completed school year. Attend college representative presentations visiting Rock Ridge by registering on SchooLinks under "Events".
Juniors should looking at different colleges to build their list. One immediate opportunity is to attend a college fair. See below.
Juniors only - VA Girls & Boys State program
PLEASE READ:
This is a summer program organized by the American Legion Auxiliary of Ashburn.
If you are interested, fill out this form. Please know that this information will be shared with the American Legion Post 2001 in order to start the process.
- Girls State Program (Virginia Girls State of the American Legion Auxiliary) will be held at Longwood University from June 15-20. We have six (6) primary slots but historically have been able to send additional delegates.
- Boys State Program (https://www.vaboysstate.org/) will be held at Radford University from June 15-21. We do not have a limit on primary slots and typically have been able to send 10 delegates.
Eligibility Process
- High school rising Seniors with at least 1 semester remaining
- Outstanding qualities of leadership, character, loyalty and service to their school & community
- Above average scholastic standing
- Delegates must be United States citizens or legal residents of the United States
- Delegate and their parents must be residents of Virginia
- Delegate should exhibit an interest in the government process
- If the delegate is 18 years old when attending, they must undergo a background check
Selection Process
- High school counselor provides a recommended list of candidates to American Legion Post 2001 (sponsoring organization).
- American Legion members conduct interviews to establish an Order of Merit List (OML) for delegates and verify all qualifications are met. Both primary and alternate delegates will be determined.
Registration cost for delegates to attend is provided by American Legion Post 2001 in Ashburn as the sponsoring organization. Delegates will only pay for transportation to and from the program.
Each school should have received information on both programs from the Virginia American Legion or Virginia American Legion Auxiliary but if additional information is needed, the websites are provided above.
Tentative timeline:
Jan - Mar - school counselors solicit delegates
Mar 14 - names of delegates due from respective school Counselors
Mar 18-20 - Scheduled Interviews of all delegates at Independence HS
Mar 24 - Delegates informed (primary & alternates) for final confirmation
April 1 - Registration Fees Due by sponsoring organization
May 15 - Registration completed by sponsor organization
June 1 - Online forms completed by delegates
June 7 - District 16 Girls State Orientation
June 15-20 - Girls State Program at Longwood University
June 15-21 - Boys State Program at Radford University

Summer Leaders EXperience at West Point
Led by current West Point cadets, Summer Leaders Experience (SLE) is a weeklong immersion into a West Point cadet's academic, military, and social life. At SLE, you will explore West Point from all angles, including our high-tech educational facilities, team-building athletic activities, and realistic military training.
SLE gives you a taste of the character, determination, commitment to excellence, and leadership skills required to become a cadet at West Point.
Applications for SLE Summer 2025 opens Feb. 15, 2025.
An SLE application doubles as the first step of a West Point application. However, please note that completing an SLE application is not an obligation to complete a West Point application or attend West Point.

Law Camp is a tremendous opportunity for rising seniors to gain a week long team building/mock trial experience during the summer between their junior and senior years of high school. Application packet is below.
SOPHOMORES
Girls Who Code Summer Program
For Current 9th to 12th graders
It’s official–the Girls Who Code 2025 Summer Programs Application is officially open! Girls Who Code Summer Programs help high school girls and nonbinary students build coding skills, explore career pathways in tech, and connect with a supportive community–no program fees or prior coding experience required!
Students can choose their own adventure with two exciting program options:
Summer Immersion Program (SIP): Spend two weeks designing computer games in live virtual classrooms while making friends, getting practical college and career advice from industry leaders, and exploring a future career in tech. Eligible students can apply for a $300 SIP Student Grant plus laptop and hotspot access! SIP Round 1: July 7-July 18; SIP Round 2: July 28-August 8.
Pathways: This flexible, six-week program lets students learn at their own pace with step-by-step video tutorials. Participants explore hot topics in tech like artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, and web development, with opportunities to apply new skills to real-world projects and get career insights from tech industry pros. Pathways: June 30-August 8

Loudoun Youth Leadership Summer program
LYLP is a week-long experience designed to introduce youth to leadership concepts and communication skills while giving them exposure and interaction with local business, government and community leaders. Open to all Loudoun County rising sophomores, juniors and seniors, candidates participate in leadership workshops, have interactive sessions with county leaders and gain exposure to technology, business and agricultural economic drivers in Loudoun.
