NEWS FROM PSD
Hate has no place in PSD: Resources amid disturbing text trend
Dear PSD Community,
We are writing to address a deeply disturbing issue affecting students in Poudre School District and across the country. We have become aware that some of our students are receiving racist, hateful, and threatening text messages. This is part of a disturbing trend happening nationwide. We are actively investigating the incidents in partnership with our School Resource Officers and are working to address the incidents while supporting our students. This behavior is absolutely unacceptable and has no place in our schools or community.
At this time, Fort Collins Police Services has indicated that the phone numbers used to send the messages are fake (spoofed) numbers and the messages received are similar to those being reported in other states. They are encouraging any student who receives the messages to report them to their SRO and reports may also be made online to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
We understand that learning of these incidents may result in a range of emotions for our students, staff, and families. We are taking the following actions to support all students and ensure they are safe at school:
- Student and Staff Support: Our counselors and mental health professionals are available to provide emotional and mental health support for any student impacted by these messages. These staff are available to listen, support, and help students process these experiences. More mental health information and resources are available on the PSD Mental and Behavioral Health Resources web page. If you are a staff member and need mental health support, please reach out to Employee Assistance Services.
- Reporting: We encourage anyone who receives such messages, or who witnesses racist, discriminatory, or harassing behavior, report it immediately to a staff member, school administrator, or any trusted adult. Our district is committed to investigating each report, addressing these behaviors, and upholding a safe and inclusive environment for all students. Anyone can report this and other incidents using PSD’s incident reporting form. Additionally, Fort Collins Police Services is encouraging any student who receives such text messages to report them to their SRO and reports may also be made online to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
- Community Partnership: We believe that everyone has a role in fostering inclusivity and respect. We ask for your partnership in discussing these values with your student(s) and reminding them of the importance of treating others with respect and compassion.
Please know that our district stands firmly against racism and hate of any kind. More information can be found in District Policy JBB: Harassment or Discrimination of Students. We are dedicated to supporting our students, staff, and families each and every day and are committed to building a school community where every child is safe and respected.
Thank you for your continued partnership and trust.
Sincerely,
Poudre School District
Measure 4A passes- thank you, voters!
Dear PSD Community,
We are incredibly thankful and honored that unofficial election results indicate that voters have supported a mill levy measure that will keep our district strong and sustainable for the near future. The mill levy will allow PSD to:
- Better fund maintenance and renovations to extend the useful life of buildings.
- Add air-conditioning systems to schools that do not currently have A/C.
- Improve staff pay to recruit and retain top talent.
- Support our smaller neighborhood schools.
- Invest more in classroom curriculum materials, technology, music, athletics, and more.
- Expand Career and Technical Education opportunities.
By passing this measure, you have entrusted us with a great responsibility. PSD is committed to transparency with all funding, including the dollars that will be raised through the mill levy measure. A community oversight committee will be created to ensure funds are used appropriately, and a web page—similar to those created for past measures—will show how funds are being allocated. Please continue to visit the 2024 Mill Levy webpage and our social media channels for updates.
As we consider the recent election results, we understand that changes on both national, state, and local levels can bring a range of emotions and responses across our community. No matter these outcomes, PSD remains steadfast in its mission to support every student, every day. The values we share as a district—fostering growth, inclusion, and opportunity— will continue to guide us forward as we serve our students, families, and staff with dedication.
Thank you again for your trust in PSD.
Homeless Awareness Month
Poudre School District serves approximately 1,500 students experiencing homelessness. The number of PSD families and youth experiencing homelessness continues to increase and their needs have risen exponentially. Currently, one out of every twenty students is experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity in our district. Information and teaching resources on supporting students experiencing homelessness can be found at the National Network for Youth, and Learning for Justice sites. Local information about PSD can be found on the PSD website. You can make a difference just by being aware of the issue and spreading that awareness to your sphere of influence such as family, friends, colleagues. If you are interested in ways you can help minimize the impact of homelessness for our students, please consider donating directly to the PSD McKinney-Vento fund by clicking here. Funds go directly to removing educational barriers for students who are experiencing homelessness, so they have access to school and have the support to be successful. Additionally, if you are interested in your donation being able to support beyond educational barriers to support families with basic needs and even housing assistance, please consider donating to the PSD Foundation’s Compassion Fund using this link. Thank you, and we wish you all a happy Fall Season!
Volunteers are needed across Poudre School District to support our Teachers & Students!
PSD sends frequent emails to currently registered volunteers, but those are getting lost in some recipients' junk mail folders. If you are registered as a volunteer with PSD, please check your junk mail & mark those sent by "Volunteer Coordinator" as safe to receive.
For those who are not yet registered to volunteer but want to help in our schools please visit - Volunteer Registration
PSD Now Newsletter
One of many ways information is shared is through the PSD Now community newsletter, which features timely information about the latest happenings in the district. This is emailed to families and interested community members about every other Thursday.
