Red Hawks make every day count!
Red Hawk Pledge
Each day during morning announcements, we repeat our Red Hawk pride pledge with sign language:
I am safe, responsible, and respectful.
Students have expectations depending on their location in the building, we have been discussing different ways we can show our expectations. These are great to include at home!
DROP-OFF/PICK-UP
IF YOU NEED TO GET OUT OF YOUR CAR FOR ANY REASON, PLEASE PARK IN THE LOT.
Please remember if you are dropping off in the circle drive, we ask that you do not park. If you do need to park to assist your students, please pull in the parking lot and assist your student to the crosswalk.
THE FRONT CIRCLE DRIVE IS FOR A QUICK, TIMELY DROP-OFF. IF YOUR CHILD TAKES A LITTLE LONGER, WE ASK THAT YOU PARK OR MOVE UP AFTER THE CROSSWALK.
When dropping off in the circle drive, please pull all the way up to the crosswalk to let your student out.

Capturing Kids Hearts
Our character word for April is perseverance.
What is Perseverance?
Perseverance is the willingness and ability to keep going when things are tough. People who persevere show steadfastness and give the extra effort needed to do something despite how hard it is or how long it takes to reach the goal.
Why focus on Perseverance?
- Perseverance encourages positive self-talk and thinking. When faced with difficult tasks, perseverance helps students reframe with positive thoughts, such as: "I'm not good at this YET!"
- Perseverance develops empathy. Students gain a better understanding of who they are and develop more empathy and compassion for others who may struggle to reach a goal.
- Perseverance sparks personal growth. Pushing through complex tasks builds resilience and helps students discover how capable they are.
Perseverance in Action:
- Share stories and challenging experiences. Be vulnerable and share personal experiences when you have struggled with a task or concept and had to work hard to push through.
- Praise effort and process, not intelligence or performance. Affirm students for the process they used to tackle tasks and point out how their abilities grow through their own hard work.
- Give your students the chance to struggle. Struggle builds self-confidence, independence, and perseverance. Resist the urge to intervene immediately and give students time to figure it out.

Nurse Information with Nurse Heather
NURSE HEATHER’S NURSING CORNER: APRIL
Hi! This month, I’m going to talk about “EVERY KID HEALTHY WEEK” which is observed from April 21st-25th. The purpose of this week is to spread awareness regarding the health of kids.It is so important for kids to be healthy and active from a young age. Take action this week by showing your child good nutrition, physical activity, and emotional wellness. Healthy habits start at home!
EVERY KID HEALTHY WEEK April 21-25
April 21st-SOCIAL EMOTIONAL HEALTH- Practice being mindful with your child. This creates an opportunity to connect, reflect, and grow together as a family. These can include:
playing a family game together, reading a book together, discussing your day with each other, and just talking to your child about how they are feeling.
April 22nd-NUTRITION EDUCATION-Building lifelong healthy eating habits. These can include:
eating together as a family, preparing dinner together, talking about different fruits and vegetables and how they are good for you, maybe even starting a garden together!
April 23rd-PHYSICAL ACTIVITY-Get moving! Physical activity fuels the body and mind too! Things you can do as a family include: limiting screen time and getting outside, family walk or bike ride, joining community activities such as soccer teams, ball teams, focusing on the beauty of nature with a family hike, anything to stay physical.
April 24th-RISK PREVENTION AND EDUCATION-Empower your child’s mind by talking about risk and prevention strategies. These include: Talking to your student about the harmful effects of smoking and vaping and talking to your child about alcohol and the effects of alcohol on the body. This day is focused on how to prevent these harmful substances and focusing on making healthy choices.
April 25th-FAMILY ENGAGEMENT-Family engagement is essential to the healthy building blocks of your student. These include: Being a healthy role model for your child, having a family night and celebrating each other, creating a space where your child feels comfortable and safe, checking in often with your child to see how they are doing.
Celebrate your child’s wellbeing during this week. Discuss healthy habits with them and role model healthy habits for them. Make healthy memories with your child!

Meet our Red Hawk Heroes!
Nicki Mathewson- Librarian
Nicki is a tireless advocate of reading for all ages. She is continually finding fun, exciting and unique ways to engage the entire school and promote the love of reading. StoryWalks, Book-opoly, Get Caught Reading, Flashlight Reading Caves, book trivia games, and Grade Level Book Displays are just the tip of the iceberg on what she has implemented as the USD 415 District Librarian. Her Wednesday weekly lessons are engaging and impactful and always facilitated with her special Sunshine personality and calming demeanor. She knows all of the students, what they love to read, and remembers the little details that make lasting, wonderful memories that will last long after they leave HES. She instills a love of reading in everyone that crosses her path. All of this, on top of ordering and managing the business of three building libraries and the specific, individual needs that entails. Her positive attitude, unstoppable work ethic and unbound enthusiasm is a true gift to all!
Molly Strathman- 3rd Grade
Molly Strathman is a Red Hawk Hero because she always saves the day for her students. She goes above and beyond what is required of her to meet the individual needs of her students. Molly’s carefully crafted lessons engage her students in the learning experience and ignites their love for learning. Her passion and love for teaching is contagious and inspiring to all of those who get the opportunity to work with her. Molly seizes every opportunity to learn new information to advance her teaching skills. She spends hours researching and learning new strategies to share with other teachers and to grow the success of our school community. She’s not only a hero to her students, but a hero to all of us at HES. Thank you Molly for being amazing!
Congratulations to our March Character kids!
March's character word of the month was Courage. Grade level teachers chose one boy and one girl who showed the characteristics of Courage. Students received a certificate, $5 gift card to the Creamery, and a Red Hawk character kids t-shirt! Pictured from back left to right: Jame McMullen, Will Tietjens, Lydia Gonzales, and Yuleixy Chun.
