What We're Reading: VPL Book Chats
Over Thanksgiving break, I read 'Society of Lies' by Lauren Ling Brown. This is Brown's debut novel, and I thought it was a success! During Maya's college years at Princeton, she tries to roll with high society and become someone she's not. She goes to extremes to get into a secret club so that she can help provide for her younger sister, Naomi, who is 10 years younger. While Maya is in college an unexpected death happens to one of the members and she questions everything about this secret club. Years later, Naomi follows in her sister Maya's footsteps and also attends Princeton. Unfortunately, for Naomi, she tries too hard to dig up secrets from the society and ends up dead. It is now up to Maya to relive some of her past to find out what happened to her sister.

There was a day I woke up at 3:30 in the morning to read 'Intermezzo' by Sally Rooney before work; that's how much I love this book and this author! Rooney explores grief, love, and the family dynamics between two brothers. Peter, a Dublin lawyer, faces relationship challenges and heavily self-medicates after their father's death. His socially awkward brother Ivan, a 22-year-old phenom chess player, connects with Margaret, an older woman separated from her alcoholic husband. Rooney showcases how easily families fall apart after a parent dies but, also, how we all find our ways back to one another. Eventually. I'm a big fan of this author. Check her out! Happy reading, friends! ~Heather
I recently read 'A Home for the Holidays' by Taylor Hahn. It is light and heart-warming, without being too predictable, and I loved it! This novel tells the story of Mel Hart, a singer who is forced to confront her past after losing her mother. She meets Barb, her mother's former best friend, and learns about a side of her mother she never knew. It's full of wit, colorful characters, and spoke to the music lover in me.
This is the perfect read for a snowy weekend afternoon; it currently has 3.83/5 stars on Goodreads.com.
Happy reading!

Community Quilt Project

The blocks will be assembled into a finished quilt that will be auctioned off in the Spring/Summer of 2025. The proceeds from the auction will benefit future programming at the Vinton Public Library. We hope the project appeals to beginning quilters, experienced quilters, and everyone in between. Thank you for supporting our library!
