North High Newsletter
October 2024
From the Principal
Viking Families,
Teachers and students are working hard for a strong finish to the 1st quarter (Oct. 11th). Thank you for helping your students make attendance to school and class a priority. Remember that we have free tutoring available every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 3:15-5pm in the Homework Help Room located in the school library. In addition, students have access to the online tutoring platform called “Paper” available through the Clever app on their school issued iPad.
We regularly review what it means to Be a Viking: Responsible, Respectful and Accountable! We want students to enjoy extracurricular activities while keeping success in the classroom as priority #1. To that end, we will consider attendance and behavior when determining whether students can attend games, dances, concerts, or other activities. Student engagement in the classroom leads to greater involvement in and connection to our school community.
Also, we continue our partnership with the OPD K-9 Unit to assist with the detection of contraband at school. All these measures are part of our ongoing effort to cultivate a positive, safe, and rigorous learning environment.
Parent-Teacher Conferences are October 10th 12-7pm in the MPC. See details below.
As always, thank you for your continued support of the Viking Community. If you have any questions, please contact us at 531-299-2700.
Go Vikings!
IMPORTANT: Cell Phone Expectations
PLEASE NOTE: All cell phones and earbuds/headphones must be off and away in all instructional areas of the building. This includes classrooms, the library, and anywhere learning is taking place. Students will be permitted to have their phones out during lunch and passing periods (as needed). It is crucial that students come to school with charged iPads every day. Students will not be allowed to use their phones for class work. Thank you for reinforcing this information with your student and partnering with North High.
Pre-ACT for 9th & 10th Grade is on 10/22/24
Centennial School Year!
Pick-Up & Drop Off
Please note, the Bulter Gast YMCA is NOT an approved pick up or drop off location for students. To help the flow of after-school traffic, students also cannot be picked up on 36th Street. Thank you for your cooperation!
Lunch Detentions
We expect our students to 'Be a Viking' in all areas of the building. This means being respectful, responsible, and accountable. Not following these school wide expectations could result in the assignment of a lunch detention.
Lunch detentions will be held in the lecture hall. Students assigned a lunch detention will not be allowed to go to the cafeteria or Viking Center during lunch. Students will be offered a sack lunch and must follow lunch detention expectations. Failure to serve lunch detention will result in further disciplinary action.
Homework Help Room
Students planning to attend homework help room must either sign up for the late bus or make sure they have a ride home. Please see the included graphic for more information about the homework help room.
Extracurricular Activities
Please note, attending extracurricular activities, such as school dances, is a privilege. Students are expected to demonstrate the values of being a Viking consistently. Therefore, students in good standing must meet the following expectations to attend:
- On track for graduation
- Passing a minimum of 6 classes
- Fewer than the equivalent of 5 unexcused absences
- No out-of-school suspension for any violation the week of the event
If students fail to meet these expectations after purchasing a dance ticket, refunds will not be provided.
Advanced Academics
Please read the document below for updated information on AP and Dual Enrollment information. We are excited to announce that the Omaha Public Schools will provide Advanced Academic support to pay for all tuition and fees for students who wish to enroll in Dual Enrollment courses. The district will also pay the fee to take the Advanced Placement Exam in May for all Advanced Placement courses.
