RSU 21 Community News 3-28-25

Message from the Superintendent
Dear RSU 21 Community,
It is hard to believe that the end of March is upon us. I wanted to take this opportunity to provide some updates from our recent school board proceedings and ongoing budget planning.
The board has officially approved Wednesday, June 18, as the last day of school. This will be a half-day for students.
Also, our budget preparation for Fiscal Year 2026 continues to progress. This past week, the Finance Committee held cost center review meetings for all the schools and nearly all the Central Office departments. If you missed any of these meetings, please click here to access the RSU 21 budget page, which has links to all budget meeting videos, including the three cost center meetings from this past week.
We encourage and appreciate the community's participation in this process. If you are looking for highlights of the budget, please refer to my note in last week's newsletter.
Much Love,
Terri Cooper

School Board Committee Updates
Communications Committee
At our March 11 meeting, we focused heavily on our budget rollout, ensuring that information is clear, accessible, and reflective of our district’s values. We are framing the budget as an investment in our children and community, with visual aids and infographics in development to illustrate the role of necessary key cost centers like HR and Administration. To expand public awareness, the Communications Committee has updated the district website for easier access to budget documents, prepared printed budget schedules for placement across the three towns, and worked with town managers to share updates via municipal websites and social media.
Also, I just want to give a special thank you to Matt Shinberg, our Communications Specialist, for his continued efforts in sharing budget updates, amplifying district stories, and coordinating student engagement opportunities—including introducing the MSK Film Club field trip to his old line of work as an executive producer at Channel 8 News! The kids really enjoyed getting a behind-the-scenes look at how local TV news is produced.
A special thanks to EFKA for providing funding for this opportunity.

Communications Committee Chair
Curriculum Committee
At the March 19 meeting, our committee highlighted its focus on 21st-century skills and experiential learning opportunities, including vocational partnerships and classroom innovation to help students become engaged learners and critical thinkers.
Our committee also shared early data on student engagement, revealing a strong interest in hands-on science and interactive learning.
We also had a conversation regarding our 24/25’ committee goals, which center on guiding curriculum development, exploring emerging topics like AI and innovative thinking, strengthening student engagement and inclusion, and deepening our community and mentorship connections.

There are projects going on at every school! The snowfall in February put a few things behind but we are back in gear for a timely finish to all of the winter projects! Some highlights include:
Mildred L. Day School - The water filtration system was upgraded in February. The gym floor will be
re-lined, and two classrooms will receive new floor tiles over the April break.
Kennebunk Consolidated School - The safety film installation for the front atrium and the front door access system has been completed as well as repairs to the outdoor storage buildings. The sewer connection line between the building and town needs a rubber coupling replaced and the contractor will repair that as soon as the ground thaws. In the interim, the line is being cleared frequently to keep sewage from backing up into the building's restrooms.
Sea Road School - Roof repairs over the library and repair of painting of various interior and exterior
areas are completed, and painting and projects will continue the interior and exterior throughout the spring and summer. Two big projects for the spring/summer months are the soundproofing of the music room and the replacement of parking light poles.
Kennebunk Elementary School - This school also has an upgraded door access/camera system and the safety film installed in the atrium. A gas hot water heater was also recently replaced.
Middle School of the Kennebunks - There were door frame/post repairs completed along the glass
hallway, an upgraded door access/camera system, and the safety film installed in the atrium. A classroom furniture project was separated into two years due to budget constraints imposed on this year’s school budget, so the first half is complete and the second half will be done in the upcoming school year.
Kennebunk High School - The Hot water systems issue in part of the building is being addressed due to a computer screen/sensor issue that should be here and completed before the end of March. Ongoing work for the exterior includes a new weather alert system being installed (to alert coaches and players of nearby lightning) and field work for all sports venues to prepare for the spring sports season.
The Nutrition Staff continues to excel at providing new and healthy options as well as some
entertainment for our various schools and are working hard to keep our students healthy and happy!
All exterior sports fields, which are used both by the schools and the various towns’ recreation leagues, are being readied for spring and summer sports. The RSU 21 team supports and maintains all of these fields all year round.
Operations Director Richard Terwilliger-Smith is responsible for scheduling the buildings, fields, and equipment for all athletic events held by the schools and the towns whose park/recreation departments use for youth activities during the spring and summer season.
