DR. HERNANDEZ' BACK TO SCHOOL MESSAGE
Dear Coleman Families,
I hope you and your loved ones are enjoying a safe and joyful summer!
The past two years, we have worked diligently to recover the “Coleman Experience” after the COVID-19 pandemic, and our College and Career Readiness Performance report included below shows positive results. The "Coleman Experience” aims to extend our students' learning beyond the classroom walls, while maintaining a supportive school community, where each and every member can reach their potential. We are proud to be the first and oldest STEAM certified middle school in Gwinnett County and the state of Georgia! We focus on teaching Gwinnett County Public Schools’ (GCPS) Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS) through the lens of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) in units of Project Based Learning (PBL).
Academically, we are proud to announce two new STEAM- based learning opportunities for our students: Interdisciplinary Lessons and a Computer Science Connection class available at each grade level. We will have 1 PBL unit per semester, instead of 2, so our teachers and students can dedicate time to implement Interdisciplinary Lessons, which is a new effort under the state’s STEAM certification guidelines. We will continue using the Engineering Design Process and Arts Integration to answer driving questions and solve real-world problems, while practicing the Future Skills of Collaboration, Communication, Critical Thinking, and Creativity that are so important in today's jobs. Interdisciplinary Lessons will allow students to explore real-life connections and applications between subject areas. Additionally, we will continue to expose our students to speakers, businesses, and organizations, and include parent volunteers, and community partners in our learning, by opening our school to the community during our Project Based Learning showcases and extracurricular activities. An essential part of the "Coleman Experience" is achieving these learning goals while also creating a school community where each student, parent, teacher, and staff member, feels respected, valued, and supported.
In terms of our school community supports, last year using the district’s Blueprint for the Future that identifies the 4 strategic priorities of Empathy, Equity, Effectiveness, and Excellence, we successfully implemented our Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports (PBIS) program and strengthened our new academic intervention and enrichment Challenge All To Succeed (CATS) time. With the commitment and dedication of our wonderful teachers, staff, students, families, and our community partners, we have extended the “Coleman Experience” by creating more opportunities to help every student reach their individual potential and develop a sense of belonging. This year, we will have dedicated morning time to increasing Reading and Math proficiency.
As we prepare to open the 2024-2025 school year, we are excited for the work that lies ahead! We are committed to building on the 2 pillars that make Coleman Middle School so unique: Our STEAM learning program and our supportive school community. And as it is tradition, I am proud to share our 2024-2025 school theme: “Making Connections Together, The Coleman Experience” to keep us focused and inspired.
I am looking forward to welcoming your family at Meet Your Teacher/Open House!
Your Proud Principal,
Dr. Hernandez
