Superintendent's Message
It’s hard to believe we’ve already reached the third quarter! I’m genuinely proud of all we’ve accomplished together. As we move through the rest of the school year, let’s approach each day with enthusiasm and a commitment to making the most of every moment.
I am pleased to share that the Board of Education voted at its February meeting to abate an additional $3.1 million in local property taxes for the second consecutive year. This decision, made possible by two Property Tax Relief Grants from the State of Illinois, provides a total of $12.4 million in tax relief for our community over three years. This action highlights our ongoing efforts to ease taxpayers’ financial burden while supporting high-quality education in our district.
Mark your calendars! The District is hosting Safe Kids: A Parent’s Guide to Digital and Real-World Risks, an informative presentation led by the Tinley Park Police Department. This parents-only event will be held at Grissom Middle School on Wednesday, March 19, at 6:30 pm and covers topics such as cyberbullying, online enticement, internet safety, tobacco, vaping, and marijuana prevention, juvenile law, and the dangers of underage drinking. Parents can submit questions or topics of interest by Monday, March 17, allowing our presenters to customize the presentation and come prepared with answers.
Ensuring a safe and supportive environment takes teamwork. Along with attending the Safe Kids event, we encourage you to complete the Illinois 5Essentials Survey by March 28. Survey feedback from parents, staff, and students in grades four through eight offers invaluable insights into our District. Your participation is greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your continued support. Together, we're building a stronger and more vibrant school community.
Sincerely,
Dr. Dan Callaghan
Superintendent
Kirby School District 140 Board Approves Second Year of Property Tax Abatement
At its February meeting, the Kirby School District 140 Board of Education voted to abate an additional $3.1 million in local property taxes for the second consecutive year. This decision follows the district’s successful receipt of two Property Tax Relief Grants from the State of Illinois, which allows local tax reductions while maintaining funding levels with state dollars. In total, the district will provide $12.4 million in property tax relief to District 140 residents over three years.
"By abating local property taxes, we are working to support both our schools and our taxpayers," said Board President Tom Martelli.
"We understand that property taxes can be a significant expense for families and businesses. Our goal is to maintain excellent educational opportunities for our students while easing the financial impact on our community through responsible fiscal management."
The Board remains committed to balancing strong educational programming with financial responsibility, ensuring students receive high-quality instruction while keeping the tax burden manageable for residents.
Share Your Thoughts! Take the Illinois 5Essentials Parent Survey by March 28.
Over the upcoming weeks, D140 students, staff, and parents will be given the opportunity to weigh in on school climate and learning conditions by taking the annual statewide Illinois 5Essentials Survey.
Please take the Illinois 5Essentials parent survey today!
This survey assesses a school’s culture and climate and provides insight into strengths and weaknesses on the five key factors that research shows are predictive of school success - effective leaders, collaborative teachers, involved families, supportive environment, and ambitious instruction.
Your participation in the parent portion of the survey will help us understand the conditions at your child’s school and guide improvement. Your identity and survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child. We must get a 20% parent response rate for our results to be reported.
Thanks for your support!
