Superintendent's Newsletter
Harlandale Legacy,
The first month into 2025 has come to an end and I trust these first few weeks into the new semester have reminded you of the power of fresh beginnings. Remember the goals we set for ourselves, for our students and for our District. You are the engine driving this journey. Be the champion who cheers for progress and the mentor who lights the path forward. A kind word, a helping hand, a moment of encouragement – these are the ripples that turn classrooms into communities, where learning not only thrives, but soars.
NCAA Final Four TipOff Press Conference
Our District was honored to host the NCAA Final Four TipOff Press Conference at The Rayburn Clubhouse, where city and NCAA leaders came together to discuss the impact this tournament will have on our city and community. During the special event, they highlighted our Gillette Elementary students as they take part in the NCAA Read to the Final Four Challenge! It was an incredible moment to see our students recognized for their passion for reading. We’re thrilled to be part of this rare experience that unites sports, education and the spirit of community, showcasing what our city has to offer!
Mayor of SA Smart Middle School City
I’m excited to share Terrell Wells Middle School 6th Grade student Leyla Flores was officially sworn in as the first-ever Mayor of SA Smart Middle School City! Leyla was elected to this role for her exceptional leadership, creativity and dedication to making a difference. Her campaign focused on collaboration, expanding access to technology and embracing diverse perspectives. As the first-ever SA Smart Mayor, Leyla is setting the stage for future student leaders to step up, think big and work together to solve challenges that impact our city. Her achievement is not only a personal milestone but also an inspiration for students across Harlandale ISD to dream boldly and take on leadership roles that make a lasting impact. Congratulations, Leyla!
2025 Cultural Arts Fair Theme Winner
I recently visited Gilbert Elementary to surprise student Bradley Gonzales with the news that his submission, "Mosaic Cultures | Mosaico de Culturas," had been selected as the 2025 Cultural Arts Fair theme! Through "Mosaic Cultures," Bradley reminds us that every story adds a unique piece to the beautiful, diverse picture of our community. With this announcement, the 2025 Cultural Arts Fair Cover Design Contest is now open. We encourage all students to participate as the winning artwork will be featured on the cover of this year’s Cultural Arts Program. Congratulations again Bradley, and best of luck to our students as they showcase their artwork!
Texas School Counseling Association’s CREST Award
Please join me in congratulating Schulze Elementary Counselor Roxane Lopez for being awarded the 2024 Texas School Counseling Association’s CREST Award for the second year in a row! Ms. Lopez is being honored with this prestigious award for her commitment to serving her students, campus and community. She will be recognized at a special CREST Reception in early February. Congratulations Ms. Lopez! We are incredibly proud of you and the work that you do. We know you will continue to represent Harlandale ISD with pride!
Wrapping Up
Remember, every choice holds the power to shape not just a day, but a semester, a year or a lifetime. I hope you’re each enjoying what this new year has to offer. Let’s keep working to meet our goals and resolutions, and continue making Harlandale ISD a legacy worth being a part of.
Sincerely,
Gerardo Soto
