Separating from parents can be an emotionally distressing experience (for both parents and children) that creates the butterflies in the belly feeling. Practice “balloon breathing” together by placing your right hand on your heart and your left hand on your belly. Notice your breath and heartbeat. Then start to slow down the rhythm of your breath and imagine a balloon expanding and deflating in your belly. Keep the rhythm of this breath until the butterflies have flown away and you are ready to go to sleep at night or get on the bus in the morning. Encourage your child to use this breath whenever they get scared, angry or worried to help bring a calmer feeling. For more tips for dealing with big emotions, feel free to contact me.
