Message from Dr. Correa
Dear D56 Families,
Sunday will mark the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, which takes place September 15 to October 15 every year as a time to recognize and celebrate the many contributions, diverse cultures, and extensive histories of the American Latino community.
Dating back to 1968, Hispanic Heritage Month was originally observed as βHispanic Heritage Weekβ, and it was later extended to a month in 1988. Since then, Hispanic Heritage Month has been celebrated nationwide through festivals, art shows, conferences, community gatherings, and much more. Over the decades, the Latino identity has become complex, diverse, and personal. Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15 to mark the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Soon after, Mexico (September 16) and Chile (September 18) also celebrate their independence. This period serves as a reminder of the shared heritage and pride of Latin American nations and their influence on our own countryβs fabric.
Hispanic and Latino cultures are incredibly diverse, encompassing many nations, languages, customs, and histories. From music and dance to literature and cuisine, these cultures bring vibrant traditions that enrich our community. As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we also aim to create a deeper understanding of the diversity within Hispanic identities. By fostering this appreciation in our classrooms and communities, we strengthen our commitment to embracing the unique stories and perspectives that contribute to the fabric of our society.
District 56 has a value within our Strategic Plan to create community events to celebrate our diversity. With that said, on October 10th, 2024, District 56 will be hosting a Hispanic Heritage Celebration at Viking School from 5:00-7:00 pm. The purpose of this event is to create an experience for our community that informs and celebrates the heritage and contributions of Hispanic-Americans because we want the heritage of our students to be seen, shared, and celebrated. We will be providing a meal, live music, Zumba, a participatory soccer event, we will have booths from members of our local Hispanic community, and we will proudly display student work aligned to state standards related to Hispanic heritage.
Please mark your calendars for this community event, we look forward to seeing you there!

Outdoor P.E. has been a blast! Mr. Sator and Mr. Spangler introduced students to the game, "Treasure Hunt". Partners ran back and forth grabbing various items from the center of the circle and brought them back to their hula hoops. The students had fun at the end counting how many items they retrieved!
School is back in session which means our hallways are filling up with colorful artwork from our students!
Our kindergarteners are busy at work learning letters and letter sounds!
Mrs. Sutter's preschool class learned about different emotions and had fun practicing faces for happy, sleepy, sad, surprised and silly!
Mark your calendars for Spaulding School Picture Day!
The Viking Cross Country team got the unique opportunity to partner with On Cloud Running this week! Sustainability is a core value of the On Cloud company and after shoes get gently used for demo events they often seek out different middle/high school running programs to donate shoes so they can be put to good use.
On brand representative, Ellen Szostak, came to our practice with a few different models of shoes for runners to try out. At the end of practice all 40 runners on the team were able to take home a pair of running shoes! Shoes are the only piece of equipment runners need for their sport and it was so fun to watch all our runners experience the difference!
Thank you to Ellen & On for this awesome experience for our runners!
Mrs. Bromleys class visited the Warren Newport Public Library on a walking field trip and worked on some drawings that will be on display for Hispanic Heritage Month.
Staff at River Trail wore yellow to celebrate Childhood Cancer Awareness Month for all the children we serve, know, and love.
5th grade set up mold terrariums to learn how food is preserved with other additives like salt and sugar or how quickly it molds.
