Sophia Ball Wins Essay Contest
In a city already proud of its past, one seventh grader is reminding us just how special Westfield really is. Sophia Ball, a student at Westfield Middle School, recently won the 2025 Essay Contest hosted by Westfield Living Magazine and the Westfield Education Foundation.
Sophia explores Westfield’s role in the Underground Railroad and its deep-rooted tradition of kindness. She affectionately calls it “Bestfield”—not just because it sounds clever, but because she truly believes it to be best. Sophia captures what many of us feel but haven’t put into words: that Westfield isn’t just a place on a map—it’s a place where people still look out for one another.
Congratulations to Sophia on a job well done, and great work to all students who submitted essays this year. You can read Sophia's article in the May edition of Westfield Living Magazine.
Rocks in the News: Shamrock Springs Raises $62k for American Heart Association
At Shamrock Springs Elementary, things got a little messy on Wednesday—but for all the right reasons.
It started with a challenge: raise money to support heart health through the American Heart Association’s Kids Heart Challenge. It ended with a bucket of slime and one very brave P.E. teacher, Christine DeCraene. DeCraene volunteered to be slimed as a reward for a successful fundraising effort. The incentive proved to be a worthy one, with more than 400 students joining in to raise funds. In the end, they raised over $62,000—the highest total of any school in the entire state.
Shamrock Springs was featured on Channel 8 News. Watch the segment to learn more!
