NEXT WEEK: READ ACROSS AMERICA
Read Across America took place this week and we celebrated all week long with daily dress code themes and literary trivia. On Friday afternoon, students were invited to attend "Story Time with Last Year's Class." For 15 minutes at the end of the day, students stepped back a grade and listened to a book read by last year's teacher. It was a fun chance to remember our friends, teachers and rooms from last year, and to think about how far we've come this year!
5th GRADE IS BOSTON BOUND
Each spring the WCS fifth grade class takes a trip to Boston to explore the Freedom Trail. This is a nice close to their year-long study of American History through the Revolutionary War. This trip is entirely funded through the generosity of our families and community, who sponsor students in an annual "Read-A-Thon" that takes place one after school one afternoon in March. This year's Read-A-Thon took place on Wednesday and was a wild success.
5th grader Willa Luchies reports "The WCS 5th graders have been working very hard to get the funds to go to Boston and see history in person. On March 5th, all of the 5th graders stayed after school to read for two hours to raise money. They seem to have made it happen! All of the money that the 5th graders made at the Read-a-Thon is enough to bring their class to Boston! They are still bringing the donations in, but they have managed to get their friends and families involved to support our efforts."
Thank you to everyone who pledged to support a student, or who encouraged our readers to do their best!
DID YOU KNOW...
We have hundreds of items to bid on at this year's WCS Auction.
CLICK HERE to see some of this year's amazing auction items!
Each year the Woolwich Central School 8th-Grade class plans for a week-long field trip to Washington, D.C. In many cases, Woolwich students have spent the first 10 years of school together, in the same building and this trip is not only a capstone to their time together at Wildcats, but an educational opportunity like no other. For some students, this is the first time they have left New England, or have traveled at all without their parents. Beyond the valuable chance for some independence, students use this week to provide real-life context for the history they’ve learned in school, honor our veterans, and experience time as citizens in our nation’s capital.
To make this trip happen, the 8th-grade class begins fundraising while in 7th-grade. Our students have worked hard, hosting dinners, selling coffee, and soliciting auction donations to raise funds, and are excited to present an amazing live and silent auction to our community in April. The Woolwich Central School Auction is the largest (and final) fundraising opportunity for the WCS 8th grade trip to Washington, D.C., and without the support of our community, this trip could not happen!
Please join us in supporting this year’s 8th-grade class at the annual WCS Auction on Saturday, April 5th, from 5-8pm. 100% of the proceeds from this event will go to supporting their trip.

Things to Talk About
- INCREDIBLE NEWS! Thanks to the generosity of our community, the Square 1 Art fundraiser has collected $4,000! This means that the WCS Art department will receive 1,333.33 as a donation! That means a lot more creative student artwork is in the works for next year. If you ordered items with your student's artwork from Square 1, they will be shipping those products directly to your house.
- First Student and RSU1 now use BusRight, a program that manages the time and location for our school buses! Earlier this month, guardians were emailed a link to set up the app. This will allow them to view their student's stop and to see the exact location of the bus. The app offers the option to receive alerts that your bus starts the route or ends the route as well as an update that your bus is only a few minutes from your stop. Please reach out to the school office if you have any questions.
- The PTA will be hosting our monthly meeting next Wednesday, (March 12th) at 6 PM in the WCS library, with special guest Mr. Libby! We will be discussing the upcoming Eat the Rainbow week and a few other events we have coming up. If you would like to see what we're all about, we would love to see you there!
- The WCS Backpack program is always accepting new families. If you would like a free bag of snacks and fresh produce sent home on on Fridays, please reach out to Mrs. Pratt at jpratt@rsu1.org. It costs nothing to enroll, and you can opt out at anytime, as needed. This confidential program is meant to provide some food over the weekends, and can be utilized by any WCS family!
