From the Principal
Happy New Year, Lodi High School Families!
As the 1st semester of the 24/25 school year comes to a close, I want to commend our students, staff, and families for their hard work and commitment throughout these past months. This is a pivotal time of year, with final exams, projects, and reflections on what we’ve accomplished together. I encourage our students to stay focused and finish strong as they showcase their learning and growth. Please remind your student to reach out to teachers or counselors if they need support, and let’s all work together to make these final weeks productive and positive.
The end of one chapter also marks the beginning of another, and we are excited about the opportunities the new semester will bring. Fresh courses, upcoming events, and new goals lie ahead, offering students a chance to showcase their talents. Whether participating in academics, athletics, arts, or service activities, there’s something for every student to engage with and explore.
As always, thank you for your partnership as we help our students succeed and make the most of their high school experience.
Go Blue Devils!
Mr. Jelinek
Upcoming Important Dates
Final Exam Week - Jan. 15, 16, 17
With the 1st Semester coming to a close soon, and Final Exams right around the corner, here are some reminders for students and parents:
All students need to be present for their scheduled exam period. The only students who don’t need to be here for their classes are students who TA at the high school or have senior release.
In order to maintain a quiet, testing environment during exams, students must remain in the class for the FULL 90 MINUTES.
Students will be allowed to study quietly in the commons at any time, where teachers will act as resources for various content areas.
Students will have open campus for lunch during finals week.
Weather Contingency Plan
Please note: If there is a weather related closure on any day during finals week, finals will all be delayed a day.
If there is a weather related closure on January 15, the finals schedule for that day will take place on January 16, the finals scheduled for January 16 will be scheduled for January 17, and the finals scheduled for January 17 will take place on January 21.
If there are two days of inclement weather (for example, closure on January 15 and January 16), finals will be scheduled on January 17, January 21, and January 22.
If there is a weather related late start either day, the finals schedule will begin at 10 a.m. and be adjusted accordingly with the make-up exam periods being canceled for the day in question.
If we have an early release due to weather on Wednesday or Thursday, the final that is missed would be rescheduled for Friday afternoon. For example, if we have an early release on January 15, the exam missed would be rescheduled for January 17 during the make-up exam time. Any exams that need to be made up would then need to be scheduled individually by the student with his or her teacher.
Lodi Booster Club - Rock the Gym!
Friday, January 17
The Lodi Athletic Booster Club is once again sponsoring the annual Rock the Gym Night fundraiser. Fans will have opportunities to win some great prizes while supporting our Girls and Boys Basketball Teams when they face off against Lake Mills. The evening starts with the girls at 6:00 pm, and the boys play in the nightcap, with the tip-off set for 7:30 pm.
The chairs featured to the right were purchased by the Booster Club!
The schedule for participation in Rock the Gym for our Wrestling and Boys and Girls Basketball teams is listed below.
Spring Sports Code of Conduct Meeting
The spring sports code of conduct player/parent meeting will be February 10 at 7:00pm in the high school auditorium. All athletes and a parent/guardian should attend.
If you attended a code of conduct meeting for fall or winter sports, you do not need to arrive until 7:30pm. At that time, each spring sport coach for baseball, golf, girls' soccer, softball, and track/field will then hold a player/parent meeting.
Lacrosse players will only need to attend the code of conduct meeting starting at 7:00 pm, if you have not attended one for a fall sport or winter sport. All lacrosse players and a parent/guardian should attend the Sauk Prairie sports meeting on Monday, March 3 at 6:00pm in the Sauk Prairie High School main gym.
In the Classroom
Field Ecology
In Field Ecology, they took a trip to the state Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) Processing Center in Poynette. This facility tests about 20,000 deer across the state of Wisconsin each year for CWD. Students in Field Ecology learned about the causes and spread of CWD, how the general public can help, and why testing and data collection is important for scientific research on wildlife diseases. A few students also got to gear up and get hands-on experience in extracting lymph nodes from deer submitted by hunters, which get submitted to a lab for testing and cataloged in the facility.
Individual Phy Ed.
In Individual Physical Education class our students were able to experience Scuba Diving! Once again, thanks to Don from Breezeway Bubbles Scuba LLC for coming out to give the students a chance to learn about and try SCUBA. It was a great experience!
Health Class
During the 24/25 school year, Ms. Puls' Health classes have been partnering with OSC in a program called Blue Devil Buddies, where her 9th grade students meet with OSC students once a month either at the high school or at the elementary school. During their time together the students do team building activities where they learn a little bit about each other. The connections they build between the two classes help the overall culture at both schools.
Featured in the photo to the right is Ms. Puls, along with OSC teachers, Abbey Ballweg and Jessica Homan.
Art Events
This winter and spring, the art department has several extracurricular opportunities for students to participate in. Please see the link below for deadlines and descriptions.
Music News!
Breakfast Club will be singing at the Wisconsin State Education Convention in Milwaukee! The group auditioned at the end of last school year and was selected to perform at the Baird Center on Friday, January 24th.
FFA Blood Drive
On Wednesday, December 11 the FFA held a Blood Drive. The drive collected 41 units on a goal of 46! Your contributions helped save up to 123 lives!
You may not be aware, but our FFA blood drives not only save lives, but also give scholarship opportunities for our students. For the 2024-2025 Scholarship we have collected 82 units (this includes the July drive). Currently, LHS has earned the $1,000.00 Scholarship tier, and with one more drive to go (March 19th), a LHS student(s) should be in position to earn the $1,500.00 Scholarship! WOW!
Thank you Mr. Anderson, FFA students and specifically, Senior, Vivian Beld, for your planning and running of this worthwhile event!!
Holiday Concert
Once again this year, we'd like to extend our appreciation to our students who performed in our annual Holiday Concert. As always Doug Hoeft, our band director, and Kate MacRae, our chorus director, had our students prepared and singing and playing their best for family and friends. The highlight of the evening was the annual tradition of alumni, staff members and parents joining our students in the Hallelujah Chorus that ended the evening magnificently.
Advisory - Holiday Door Decorating
Homerooms decorated their doors in a Holiday theme during our final Advisory Lesson of 2024. Students were challenged with using random items that were placed in a bag for each homeroom. Winning homerooms this year were Mr. Murray's, Ms. Ashbeck's, Ms. MacRae's and Ms. Potter's. Special recognition went to Ms. Barlow's Homeroom for being the most creative.

How to Help Your Child Navigate Through High School
The Science Department
Every month one of our departments will share some advice with our parents on how best you can help support your child during these sometimes very difficult years. Many of our teachers have or have had teenagers of their own, so they 100% understand the challenges that parenting this age group can present.
We hope you enjoy the video!

Nurse Notes - January
Frostbite:
Frostbite is an injury to the body that is caused by freezing. Frostbite causes a loss of feeling and color in affected areas. It most often affects the nose, ears, cheeks, chin, fingers, or toes. Frostbite can permanently damage the body, and severe cases can lead to amputation.
Warning signs of frostbite include:
Numbness and a white or grayish‐ yellow color to the affected skin, which may feel unusually firm or waxy.
People with frostbite are often unaware until someone else points it out because the frozen tissues are numb.
At the first signs of redness or pain in any skin area, get out of the cold or protect any exposed skin—frostbite may be beginning.
Treatment for frostbite:
If you detect symptoms of frostbite, seek medical care.
Frostbite and hypothermia both result from exposure to cold. If you suspect someone has frostbite, also check if the affected person shows signs of hypothermia.
Symptoms of hypothermia may include shivering, exhaustion, confusion, fumbling hands, memory loss and slurred speech.
Hypothermia is a more serious medical condition and requires emergency medical assistance.
If there is frostbite but no sign of hypothermia and immediate medical care is not available: Get to a warm place as soon as possible. Unless absolutely necessary, do not walk on frostbitten feet or toes as this increases the damage. Immerse the affected area in warm—not hot—water (the temperature should be comfortable to the touch for unaffected parts of the body).
Or, warm the affected area using body heat. For example, the heat of an armpit can be used to warm frostbitten fingers. Do not rub the frostbitten area with snow or massage it at all. This can cause more damage. Don’t use a heating pad, heat lamp, or the heat of a stove, fireplace, or radiator for warming. Affected areas are numb and can be easily burned.
Prevention:
Adults and children should wear:
A hat, scarf or knit mask to cover face and mouth
Sleeves that are snug at the wrist
Mittens (they are warmer than gloves)
Water‐resistant coat waterproof and insulated boots or shoes.
Illness:
Keeping students home when they are ill helps to reduce the spread of illness. The link from CDC is a quick guide of what you can do to help reduce the spread.

Food Service
January 2025
Happy New Year to All! I hope everyone had the chance to spend time with family and friends.
I want to send a special thank you to everyone-staff, students and teachers for a great December experience. The kitchens were decorated beautifully by staff at every school and staff dressed up and played merry to go with the season. The Grinch even made several appearances in the kitchens!
In December, our Chef on Display, John Sugimura prepared a Japanese meal for the school board, principals and administrators. We did the same Japanese meal - Yakitori Soba for the students and staff the next day. John did a tableside dumpling tasting for the teachers right before lunch as a thank you for all of their support. John visited the classrooms of Renee Moldenhauer and JP Fassbender. He talked about his Japanese background and roots, sharing that he is a professionally trained sushi chef and a graduate of the prestigious Sushi Institute of America in Little Tokyo. Chef John is committed to sparking curiosity and excitement for authentic Japanese Food. He explained the significance and meaning in every element of his dishes. He made dumplings for each class, taught each class how to use chopsticks, how the food is plated and why, and the principles that stemmed from his grandmother Tsui who along with his grandfather was held in an internment camp during WWII because they were Japanese. The students were very attentive and participated in making the dumplings, plating them and of course eating them! What a real life experience this was for all of us. Thank you again Renee and JP for allowing us to teach the students about other world cuisines and Chef John for sharing your talent and culture with us.
This month our United Tastes of America leads us to classic beef stew over biscuits. We will also offer a turkey piegga for our Limited Time Offering. Our Harvest of the Month specials are grapefruit, cabbage and winter savoy which is a type of lettuce. Please try them throughout the month in specials and on our salad bars.
As a reminder, please be mindful to return trays and silverware dish area so we have enough to serve. We have lost many trays and silverware since school started and it is very expensive
to keep replacing them. Thank you for your cooperation.
Have a great January!

LHS Staff Appreciation
Appreciate a Staff Member!
We have so many amazing educators here at Lodi High School! Mr. Jelinek and Mr. Marshall sat down with each staff member, and one of the common themes that came up was how much our staff love to be appreciated by the families that they serve. When you experience a staff member who is going above and beyond or deserves some recognition, please consider giving them a shout-out through our staff appreciation google form. Your appreciation will be put on a staff appreciation poster and shared with that staff member.
