Senior Seminar Speaker
Note: Dryden High School seniors have the opportunity to take Senior Seminar, a class offered for the eighth year in a row in conjunction with the Michigan College Access Network (MCAN).
MCAN's mission is to increase college readiness, participation, and completion in Michigan, particularly among low-income students, first-generation college-going students, and students of color. Further, the goal of the College Planning Course is to increase college completion by lowering barriers that prevent students from getting to and through college, including Social Capital, Academic Preparation, College Knowledge, and Affordability. College is defined as the attainment of education beyond high school, including postsecondary certificates and academic degrees.
Weekly guest speaker topics may range from specific educational opportunities to post-secondary life skills as well as the knowledge necessary to be productive members of a community, among others.
Saginaw Valley State University
Last Friday, Amber Hadley came to Dryden High School in order to speak to the seniors. Ms. Hadley is an admissions representative at Saginaw Valley State University, I personally was very interested in this speech because this is the college I plan to attend next fall. She knew everything about Saginaw Valley because aside from being an admissions representative, she also went to school there, therefore, she knows all the ins and outs of the campus.
To start off, Amber Hadley started out by giving out pamphlets, stickers, and pens to all of the students in our senior seminar class, which is something that I enjoyed. One thing Amber did that was different from the other speakers and that I found interesting was that she didn’t use a presentation or slideshow but was still able to give a very informative, energetic, and astounding speech. Inside of the pamphlet it had everything SVSU, from majors, housing, food, clubs, sports, and more. The thing that I liked the most about it was that it showed the layout of the dorms. She also answered many questions I had coming into her speech such as: “Can you have your car on campus?”, “Do you have to live on campus as a freshman?”, and more.
In order to conclude everything that has been stated up to this point, Amber Hadley came to Dryden High School from Saginaw Valley to give us information on the college process and SVSU. I found many things interesting and got a lot of good information for me personally.
Overall, her speech was super beneficial to me and I’m very glad we had her in to talk to us. If I had the chance to talk to her again I would ask about the process of switching roommates or if that is even possible, I would just like to know how that works.
Central Michigan University
On October 19th, We had a speaker from Central Michigan University present to the class. Her name was Maggie Vosin. She is an assistant director of admissions. You could tell from the moment she started speaking about Central she genuinely enjoyed being there. She spoke on the opportunities they offer, how to stay balanced, and extracurricular activities. I learned a lot about CMU during this presentation, and it made me feel comfortable already with the school and want to go there.
Some opportunities that Central offers are multiple majors, studying time management, help at all times, and closer connections to professors because of the class sizes. It's easier to learn because you can ask questions and are not hidden because there are too many people in your class. If you feel lonely on campus, there are many groups you can join. What I found interesting its CMU has a squirrel-watching club. For people who want to take pictures and watch squirrels all day. I found it interesting because I never heard of anything like that.
Staying balanced in college can be difficult at times. Maggie made it clear that CMU wants you to have the best experience there and not be overwhelmed with too much college work. They want you to have a college student experience as well. Also, if you need extra money there are jobs on campus that you can have for extra money to help with extra expenses and college. Your boss knows your schedule being a college student employee so they will help you work around your schedule. Also, getting a job on campus is a good way to make new friends and meet people.
Some extracurricular activities she mentioned were basketball, volleyball, track and field, and more. You could also join clubs like the Squirrel-Watching one or many other unusual ones. Another extracurricular activity could be doing fundraisers or joining sororities to make more memories and do stuff after school. I think overall Central Michigan University sounds like a really fun and enjoyable school to go to. I will definitely be touring there and will remember this presentation and all the things I have learned from it.
