MINDFUL MOMENTS
Parents, we encourage you to practice this week's strategies at home. The more mindful practice students have, the easier it is for them to notice when they need to use a strategy.
This Week:
Calmness and Balance
- Calming the Brain by Belly Breathing: Place your hand on your belly and breathe in and out while feeling your belly inflate and deflate like a balloon.
- Calming the Brain Through Mindfulness: Mindfulness is a big word that means paying particular attention to yourself and your surroundings. Focusing your attention on your breathing, a sound, a word, or even a picture can help calm your body. Take a minute to focus on something you wouldn't ordinarily notice as you breathe deeply.
- Calming the Brain by Putting Pressure on the Body: Creating resistance or pressure on different parts of your body can help to calm your mind and body slowly. Try taking a minute to put pressure on your hands, arms, knees, head, etc.. Take the time to notice how this gentle but firm pressure feels when applied and when you relax.
- Calming the Brain by Scanning the Body: This takes practice. Start by belly breathing and paying attention to a different part of your body as you slowly breathe in and out. What happens to your chest, arms, hands, etc. While you are paying attention to each part of your body, think about what color you would use to describe how that part feels. The color doesn't have to make sense, it is a way to help with focus.
