“How do I light up?” Wear a headlamp, battery operated string of lights, flashlights, or glowsticks. Use your imagination, dress warm and dress up!
“How can I help?” Make an ice candle! It is simple and fun! (Provided it is cold enough) directions below. If you want hands on instruction, come to our DJTA meeting Thursday January 21st 5:30-7:00 CoOp Extension conference room. We will have a, “How to make ice candles” demonstration. Thursday February 4th 12:00 noon, deliver the ice candles with a large votive candle inside. We will begin putting them out on the trail that day.
“I think the walk is too long for me!” If you think that 2 miles is too much, you may simply park at the Delta High School parking lot off of Nistler Rd. and walk the Liewer Trail only. Wear proper shoes for possible icy conditions; bring your ice cleats, walking stick or ski poles if you want more stability!
This fun event is partnered with the Delta Junction Chamber of Commerce’s Festival of Lights! Mark your calendar for a fun filled afternoon and evening, the Walk of Lights at 5:00pm and Festival of Lights Fireworks Finale at the Delta City Park compliments of the Chamber beginning at 7:00pm.
Ice Candles
1. Fill 5 gal bucket w/water
2. Set outside on deck or a piece of wood or insulation
3. Let freeze 12 hours or until the walls are 2 ½-3” thick when check with flashlight
4. Bring inside thaw until it pops
5. Take to sink tip it into sink it is heavy
6. With sturdy knife cut the round slushy ice out (it should not have frozen solid)
7. Reach in and pick it up and drain out water (now the bottom is the top of your ice candle)
8. Take your ICE CANDLE outside to re freeze!
TIPS!
Start your candle about 12 hrs prior to when you can deal with it, ie; if you work, start when you get home from work so you can deal with it when you get up in the morning. Or start in the morning then you will have extra time for more freeze in the evening. At -20 it takes about 12 hrs.at zero about 16 hours.
