Mission Driven!
What sets the Bosco Catholic School System apart from other schools? We are MISSION DRIVEN to develop the WHOLE student! The BCSS Mission statement sums up the four areas that we focus on to develop the whole student but begins with the most important piece of the puzzle, FAMILIES.
The Bosco school experience is and should be a uniquely different educational experience. Bosco is MORE than just academics. It’s a learning culture centered around experiences that develop our students Spiritually, Academically, Physically, and Socially. We provide our students with multiple opportunities to grow in their faith, academics, physical well being, and social well being. We have high expectations for student engagement and behavior and bring those to life by building strong relationships between staff and students. Integrating faith and Leader in Me habits into all that we do lays a foundation for the development of the whole student, empowering each one to be the Light of Christ in the World.
As I said, the most important piece of our mission statement is “with support from families.” We sincerely thank each one of you for choosing the Bosco Catholic School system and supporting the mission!
With support from families, we respect and encourage students to reach their potential Spiritually by developing a strong relationship with Jesus and knowledge of His Church; Academically by igniting learning, leadership, and life skills; Physically by learning about and living healthy habits; and Socially be becoming active members of the community who serve others as stewards of the Gospel so they are the Light of Christ in the world.

Student Faith Testimonies
Hannah was challenged by Mrs. Rohret to show her understanding of John 2:2-12 as a drawing. Here are her thoughts on the challenge.
"We learn so much about our faith at this school, but how much of it do we truly put into our own day-to-day life? After reading this passage in my theology class, a passage I have read many times, I pondered on the thought of what this could look like. Although I believe in my faith sometimes these bible passages can feel like made-up stories only in fairytales. It is when we realize the power of God that we can fully grasp and believe his teachings."

Hands on Learning in Science
It has been a busy year in the classrooms and laboratory in the Don Bosco Science Department. In December we said our “goodbyes” to Mrs. Joens and wished her well with her move and new adventures. Bosco is fortunate to welcome Mr. Moore to finish the year!
Current classes this semester include Integrated Science, Chemistry, Anatomy and Physiology, and Horticulture. Integrated Science students are experimenting and learning about the states of matter using ordinary household items. It is always a favorite to not only make ooblek and slime in the classroom but also understand the science of the process!

2025 NCYC Planning Committee Opportunity
Are you a parent looking for a way to get involved with NCYC? We will be having an informational parent meeting Thursday, March 7, at 6 PM in DB Room 121. No commitment needed. This will be an informational meeting to discuss NCYC 2025 and learn what a parent planning committee entails.
If you have questions, please email jrohret@boscocatholic.org.
February was a great month for athletics and the arts at Bosco. See our video!
When you are at an event and want to share, send photos to dbhssecretary@boscocatholic.org.
Nevelson Project
The students are studying the artist Louise Nevelson as we learn the history and creation process of Nevelson boxes. Nevelson boxes are created using interesting discarded items, placing them together and painting everything a solid color for display.
We would like to give a HUGE thank you to Gage Wagner and his dad, Matt. Gage and Matt graciously built and donated the boxes needed to start the project.
The art students created these Nevelson boxes utilizing many different discarded items and creating their own masterpieces.

Scheduling for Next Year
Students are putting first things first by creating their 2024-25 schedules and after-high school plans. Juniors and seniors have started looking into all the opportunities Don Bosco offers. On the 11th of March Hawkeye Community College will be onsite to register students for fall semester college classes. Social security numbers will be required to register so plan accordingly.
March is a great time for 10th and 11th graders interested in attending college after high school to start creating a list and planning spring visits. ACT registration through the high school has also started. If your student is interested and has not registered, please let me know.
I am hosting a Meet and Greet during conferences on March 11. I will have college and career materials to share, along with cookies and drinks. If you have student-specific requests for materials please let me know. I look forward to meeting you all soon!
God Bless, Ms. Martin

ISASP Information and Dates
Iowa Statewide Assessments of Student Progress (ISASP) are quickly approaching. ISASPs are required by the State as a marker for student learning outcomes based on the Iowa Core Standards. All 9th through 11th graders in Iowa as well as many other states, take these assessments. These assessments rolled out in 2019 and have replaced things like the ITEDS, ITBS, or Iowa Assessments. 9th and 11th graders take assessments in Reading, Language, and Math. 10th graders take the same plus science.
At Bosco we use ISASP to help guide course selections, specifically in looking at eligibility for college courses. Students must be proficient on the ISASP to be eligible to take college courses the following academic year. Any missed tests will need to be made up during regular class time, so please try to avoid student absences the week of April 15.
In preparation, students will take a practice test in a setting similar to what we will use for ISASP.
As the seniors do not participate in ISASP, planning is in place for the senior class to participate in activities and opportunities to develop deeper relationships within the class along with the community and within the parishes. More information on the senior plans will be in the April newsletter!

Change in COVID-19 Isolation Recommendations
Iowa Health and Human Services has provided an update on the guidance for COVID-19 isolation recommendations. This can be found on the document included below, but can be summarized by saying that COVID-19 is now treated as any other respiratory illness. The recommendation for those with respiratory symptoms is to be excluded from school and child care settings until fever-free for 24 hours without the use of a fever reducing medication AND respiratory symptoms are mild and improving.
