From the desk of the Superintendent
As we come to the middle of the first nine weeks and receive progress reports, I would ask that you spend a few moments with your child, regardless of their grade, and find out the successes and struggles that your child is having in all of their classes. This is not a time to place blame on anyone but rather a time to get refocused and get all parties on board while we are still in the early phases of the grading period.
This past week I was able to get to multiple schools and saw many of your children working hard in the classroom, enjoying lunch, and many running around in pe class or running on the playground. It was nice to be able to get out of the office and into the schools. I also know that Pre-K students were pretty decisive in their opinions that the mixed fruit was the favorite thing on their plate for lunch. Lots of hard work from school employees and students was definitely one of the highlights of the week. I got to close the week seeing the sights, sounds and traditions of "Friday Night Lights" - well some on a Thursday, for three different locations and four of our parish schools. Bands, cheer, dance and football teams played through the elements and left it all out there and showcased for the communities. I want to say a special thanks to the parents of these participants as well. Never underestimate the power of the effect on your child when they see you in the stands.
In closing , I would ask that you continue your efforts in helping the schools out by being a partner with us and not an adversary, we are all on the same team and have the same goal of educating our children. Difference in opinions will happen, but our end goals should always remain the same, opportunity for success in our children. Have a great week.

- October 9 is the first of four distance learning days for K-3 students so that teachers may complete mandatory state training on the "Science" of reading.

DID YOU KNOW?
Every student in grades K-3 is screened using a state adopted Literacy Screener named DIBELS. This screener must be administered to all Louisiana K-3 students within the first 30 days of school. This universal screening identifies which students may be at risk for experiencing reading difficulties. Teachers use this data to set and monitor literacy goals, as well as provide instructional support. This week, DIBELS Home Connect Letters will be sent home with Progress Reports. Parents will be provided student scores on the Literacy Screener and supports that can be done at home
Even when there is no homework, one of the most important things you should make sure your child does every single day is….READ!! Please make sure your child reads nightly for 20 minutes each day, even on the weekends. You can even have them read to you and ask questions- this is great for building comprehension.
