We need your help! Our 9th and 10th grade students will soon take the Pre-ACT, an important test that supports their academic growth and achievement. We are asking for donations of snacks to help keep our students nourished and focused during testing. A small gesture can go a long way in supporting their success! If you can help, please click the link below to support. Thank you for being a part of One West — your support makes a difference!
Quarter Ending Soon
Sorry for a couple of mistakes in the last Howl that will be corrected here.
- The quarter ends NEXT TUESDAY, April 8th.
- Any student earning an F during that progress report that is participating in a Spring sport or currently in an activity will receive a suspension from competing in their sport/activity that will last 15 school-days (for example, professional development day on April 18th would not count). Don't miss out on a critical part of your season, get your grades on point... TODAY!
- Even if you complete the assignments or improve the grade after its posted, it will not change the suspension, this is a WIAA rule.
- This includes SP30.
- Please work this week to ensure your grades are in great shape going into break so that you don't have to sweat it coming back from break.
Resources:

Test proctors are responsible for test room security and the administration of exams. We have many opportunities to help, both full day and half day. Pay is $20/hour and proctors must be high school graduates over the age of 18 and pass a background check. Please complete this form by April 2 to indicate your interest, and share with your neighbors!

We would love to see your student there!

FFA Celebration!
Our FFA members have been incredibly busy competing at Regional Career Development Events around the state during these past few weeks. Thank you for supporting them as they make up their missing work and please help me in congratulating all of their achievements! We had 9 teams compete this year with 6 teams advancing on to the State Contest in April. For the majority of our students, these contests are brand new challenges to them as they learn about a specific agriculture career area/industry. The contests consist of written exams, team practicums/skill demonstrations, identification, and even sometimes giving speeches on the spot. Most contests have over 100 students competing so I'll note anyone in the top 15 individually as it is an incredible achievement.

Leadership Collaborative Visits West
On the Thursday before Spring Break we hosted 60 administrators from across SPASD to visit our One West community to practice using a tool that is being developed to assess the implementation of the Instructional Framework. While this was NOT evaluative of West, there were so many impactful things happening and we shared some of the 'bright spots' of our morning which included some of the following.
The front office was a warm and welcoming space. Clear routines were in place, everyone who entered was greeted warmly, and staff knew many of the students by name.
Learning targets and essential questions were visible in learning spaces providing clear direction for staff and students.
Students were engaged in AVID tutorials with students leading the work at the whiteboards with the support of their peers, tutors, and classroom teachers. The steps to problem solving were written and discussed as students experienced productive struggle on the identified learning targets.
An ELA educator popped over to the math educator next door to have him step in and support students who were stuck while working through a math problem. He assisted in working with the students to get them 'unstuck'.
Engaging science instruction was evident with no student cell phones visible during the lesson.
An educator was using real world, student relevant examples when teaching psychology concepts.
A group of students supported by an educator were engaged in their learning by managing the mobile coffee cart. They demonstrated strong customer service skills which were met by warm and personal comments from the educators with whom they were interacting while selling coffee.
....And there were many more examples!
Student Staff Basketball Game
A HUGE shout out to Ms. Vivi, our Restorative Practices coach for organizing a fun student-staff basketball game for the day before break. It was a great time of community and celebration.
