Walsh "PBIS" - Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports
Families should have received the District 104 "PBIS" trifold brochure, which explains how PBIS supports positive student behaviors across the district. See below for more information on PBIS.
September PBIS Focus - Responsibility and Good Attendance
Attendance matters! Arriving at school on time matters! Students in the class that has the best attendance at the end of September will win a special treat!
Student of the Month
At the end of each month, teachers will select a "Student of the Month" in their classroom. This student demonstrates "SOAR" -- "Safety Matters.... Offer Kindness.... Act Responsibly....Respect Others".
Students of the Month will be recognized in front of the whole school, get a cool tshirt and certificate, get their picture on our bulletin board, and will be honored in the newsletter.

Walsh Picture Day ~ Wednesday, September 25
Mrs. Fletcher's Focus
Mrs. Fletcher is the social worker at Walsh Elementary School, and she teaches social emotional learning lessons to all students each week. What this means is that your children are learning positive affirmations, how to make friends, how to handle their emotions, and be respectful, responsible and safe everywhere they go! This year social emotional learning will be supporting what your children are learning throughout their reading program, Benchmark.
Best Parenting Skill #1
Be a Good Listener
It is important to understand your child and for that, it is important to listen to them. Many parents just keep on explaining the dos and don’ts without giving the child an opportunity to explain his emotions, fears, anxieties and doubts. Be sure to give your undivided attention to your child, when they are trying to talk to you.

District 104 Action Plan for Truancy
Tier 1 or Universal
Communication and awareness are the primary Tier 1 or Universal Level interventions. This will be accomplished through PowerSchool and Attendance Intervention and Communication System.
• Daily, the office staff will attempt to contact the parents/guardians of the student(s) who are marked absent. Additionally, a daily reminder will be sent at 9:30 AM to parents, letting them know their student(s) has been marked absent.
• All student's attendance will be tracked through PowerSchool and Attendance Intervention of Communication. Attendance postcards will be sent electronically to all students at every 5 absences (5, 10, 15, 20, 25…).
Most students/families (80% or more) are expected to respond to the Universal interventions.
Tier 2
Students’ families that have between 9 and 18 absences will receive personal communication from the school and school principal.
• 9 days of absences o A truancy letter regarding absence concerns (indicating the dates of absences) will be mailed. A copy will be placed in the student’s temporary file. o Meeting with the student (when appropriate)
• 18 days of absences
- A truancy letter will be mailed and added to their file
- The building administrator will contact the family/guardian regarding concerns.
- Future absences will be marked as Truant unless accomplished by a doctor's note.
- An attendance intervention plan can be implemented via social worker and administrator.
Tier 3
Students that have 19 or more truancies
• 21-Days of absences o A truancy letter will be mailed on each subsequent absence and added to the file.
