A Message From Ms. Modiest
Welcome Fall!!! Welcome October!!! It is hard to believe that September is just a memory. At Wharton we have been so busy. Today your child will be coming home with their progress report. Home and school communication is very important. Please connect with your child's teacher should you have any questions or concerns.
During our morning announcements students are sharing and learning about the Hispanic and Latino culture. This experience is allowing our students to learn about many people and places around the world. Traditions and culture are valuable to the uniqueness of our school population. Please be on the look out for a volunteer form that will be coming home. We are looking for support for our Fall Celebration/Halloween Parade. Mark your calendars ... on Friday, November 1st we will be planning our first parent/child activity...(Make,Taste, and Take!)
Just a reminder:
Breakfast will start daily at 7:20 and 8:20 on Wednesday late starts. We will begin school promptly at 7:50 on regular days and 8:50 on late starts. If a child is late please enter Door #4.
We appreciate your support in the following:
*Making sure your child arrives on time and attends daily.
*Completing all classwork and homework assignments.
*Promoting a love for reading.
Sincerely,
Raquel K. Modiest, Principal

Students of the Month...Responsibility
Attendance Matters!!!
A big round of applause to our families!!! We are very proud to say that our student tardies and absences are low. We also appreciate all of your efforts for contacting our office and keeping us informed when a student will be absent or tardy. Keep up the amazing job!
Safety Talk
This year we will continue to practice different safety drills. Our students are doing an outstanding job. Please be sure to talk to your child about what they are learning in different emergency situations. Keep in mind, we are preparing our students in appropriate ways the meaning and importance of staying safe.
Dress For the Weather
With colder weather upon us, we want to be sure that your child comes dressed for the weather and ready to play outside. We will be going outside for recess each day.

Mrs. Sanchez/Kindergarten News...
In ELA Kindergarteners are learning about the needs of plants and animals. The students are learning how living things have certain needs in order to survive. This week we learned about plants and how most plants need water and sun to grow. To help us understand this concept we created funny face planters and planted grass. We are giving our grass all its needs (water, soil, air, and space) in order for it to grow.
5th Grade...
Students in Ms. Penrod's 5th grade class finished their Corn Unit with a culminating activity observing sweet corn. Cook County Farm Bureau supplied the class with Corn AG Magazines. Thanks to Mrs. Manzke for supporting this activity.
Mrs. Holiday/Music News...
From Our Social Worker...
This week at Wharton, students are building connections through Benchmark to support ELA instruction time! In Kindergarten, we discussed how parents contribute to their children's lives and connected to a text about a mama bear. In third grade, we discussed animals that camouflage, such as the Artic Fox, Camel, and Cheetah, based on readings in class and discussed the idea of fitting in versus standing out. The conversation helped students connect informational texts to their lives!
Mr. Birden is thrilled to work with your children! Please do not hesitate to reach out if you need anything! pbirden@sd104.us

5th Grade Band information...
Good Morning 5th Grade Band Families!
For those that I have not gotten to meet yet, my name is Danny Tedeschi and I am the Band Director for District 104! If you are receiving this email, it is because your student has tried out an instrument and is wanting to join the band! It has been an absolute pleasure getting to know your students and I am so excited that they have made the decision to start playing a musical instrument and embark on learning an exciting and extremely rewarding new skill.
I know that you may have questions regarding the how/when band starts and I will hopefully answer those in this email. If after reading this email you still have questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me!
The first step for starting band is getting your student an instrument. District 104 is happy to partner with Quinlan and Fabish which is a world renowned company that supplies students with instruments across the United States. We are fortunate that Quinlan and Fabish’s headquarters are in Burr Ridge and they provide the best service to our students. It is highly recommended that students and families use Quinlan and Fabish to get students an instrument. Quinlan and Fabish offers many great features when families choose to rent an instrument from them:
- All repairs are covered under a warranty. Families will never be charged if an instrument needs to be repaired.
- Quinlan and Fabish Offers a rent to own program. This means that you pay a monthly fee until the instrument is paid off. Once the instrument is paid off you own the instrument and the payments stop.
- Quinlan and Fabish offers a “trial period” of 4 months. This means that for a flat rate of 72 dollars students can try the instrument for 4 months to determine if they like it or not.
Many families chose to rent an instrument from Quinlan and Fabish when they tested the instruments out last week. If you signed up to rent an instrument you do not have to do anything! If you still have to get your child an instrument and are wanting to use a reputable and reliable company like Quinlan and Fabish here are the steps you need to take
Use this link to take you to District 104's Quinlan and Fabish Page: https://www.qandf.com/directors/director_pages/Landing/2155
- Click “Rent an Instrument”
Select the instrument your student wants to play in band.
- Once you have selected their instrument it will take you to a new page for delivery timing please select the option that state “I’m not sure - whatever my student’s director or school recomends”
- Continue to confirm supplies - the music stand is optional, you can choose to include that or not, but the students NEED the Green Book.
- Click “Continue to sign rental agreement”
- Complete the information
- Sign agreement and go to cart and check out.
If these steps are confusing or you need additional assistance I have attached a video of how to rent an instrument through Quinlan and Fabish.

Some families elect to purchase an instrument elsewhere. I DO NOT recommend this. There are many instruments out there that are not quality and will break easily. If you do want to purchase an instrument for your students I would HIGHLY recommend it be from one of the following brands: Jupiter, Yamaha, Germeinhardt, King, Bach, Blessing, Selmer, Buffet, Besson, Eastman. If the instrument is not one of those brands please email me the link of the instrument you want to purchase first so I can approve that it will work for your student and you are not wasting your money on an instrument that will regularly break.
If renting an instrument is financially out of the question for your family, we have several instruments that the school can provide your student for no cost. Unfortunately, we do not have enough for every student but we have some that we are happy to provide. We want every single interested student to be in the band and MONEY SHOULD NOT BE A REASON YOUR STUDENT IS NOT INVOLVED IN BAND. If you need assistance send me an email and I will be happy to find an instrument for your student.
Finally, band is going to start the week of 10/14. Students will begin their first lessons with me during the school day and will need an instrument! Please make sure that an instrument is secured for your student before 10/14! If you need any form of assistance please do not hesitate to reach out to me!
There are currently 63 students signed up for band! This would be the largest beginning band class in many years for the district which is INCREDIBLE! I am so excited and happy your students have chosen to participate in band and cannot wait for them to start to learn their instruments! The first step of that journey is getting an instrument and having that first lesson. If you need anything from me in the next couple of weeks please reach out to me at dtedeschi@sd104.us
Thanks so much everyone and have a great day
