News and Notes for Parents at Plymouth North
Term 1 Messages help Translate to Term 2 Success!
At the start of this month, we held class meetings with each graduating class to review the high expectations of our school when it comes to attendance, behavior and academics, but also to convey to our students the reason all that is so important. As we moved from the first term deeper into the expectations of this school year, we want to send a clear message that their success in school will help translate to success in life.
We charged our Seniors with leaning into this final year of high school and taking the incredible feats they've already accomplished as underclassmen and building on them in stepping up to be the leaders of our building. I reminded them of the fact that time is fleeting, and to maximize every moment with each other before this chapter of their lives is complete and they go their separate ways.
We challenged our Juniors to invest the grit and determination to do their very best in what will be the most rigorous year so far of their academic lives, and to set themselves up for the best position possible for their post-secondary pursuits that will begin to be defined with the choices they make today.
We asked our Sophomores the question: Who do you want to be? Reminding them the "transition" phase into high school was behind them, and they have had an opportunity to see all that high school has to offer, and now is the time to start investing in the work, passions and journey through all the different paths available to them at North to begin defining who they want to be as people throughout the rest of their lives. Today was the first day of the rest of their lives.
We encouraged our Freshmen to lean in and soak up the many experiences and facets of life at Plymouth North and our Student Council members outlined all the spirit days, events and rallies that are about to take place. We expressed our hope that they would spend the year really becoming a part of the culture of our school and investing themselves in the life here: academically and through events outside of class.
Our goal was to deliver messages that will inspire them to invest in this year of their personal growth, but we know the real work comes over the next few months. These next few months are action packed, exciting and full of big expectations for all our students! We can't wait to see all they will do and help all of them in all these individual ways grow as students, grow as people and set themselves on a path that will make you, our school and our town proud. It's why we come to work! We welcome you to join us in working together to make sure every student makes the most of their time here.
To a great Term 2!

2. PN Teacher Spotlight
Across the country, there is a teacher shortage and great teachers are leaving the profession in droves for a myriad of reasons.
Here at North, we have incredible teachers and we want them to know how much we appreciate them! Here are three examples of great educators here at PNHS that are worth celebrating! Make sure you thank them for all the effort they put into helping your children grow!
Ms. Jalbert, Science
Courses Taught: Biology, Human Anatomy & Physiology
Students Say: "Ms. Jalbert is very nice and always really well prepared. She always is willing to answer our questions and does a really good job reviewing through information with us so we can understand it. I like how her class is structured." -Freshman
Her Dept. Head Says: "Ms. J always works hard for her students' success over the hundreds of students she's taught in science and puts in a tremendous amount of time outside of school with coaching, class advisor, fundraising and concessions, and coordinates trips with students to incredible destinations."
Ms. Cartmill, ELA
Courses Taught: American Lit, Dystopian Lit & Creative Writing
Students Say: "Ms. Cartmill has high standards but is also very flexible when we need it. She works with us to feel comfortable and to be ourselves. We learn a lot but we also have a lot of fun. She's a very welcoming person." -Junior
Her Dept. Head Says: Ms. Cartmill works incredibly hard to make lessons engaging. At least once or twice a week she is telling me about a new idea she has to make assignments more relatable and relevant to her students' lives. Plymouth North is lucky to have her.
Mr. Ward, Social Studies
Courses Taught: US History 2, Sports & American Society
Students Say: "Mr. Ward is easy to talk to and you know you can always approach him with anything. He has a lot of structure and expectations in class, but his class is interactive and keeps you engaged. Kids really like being in his class." -Junior
His Dept. Head Says: "Mr. Ward does a lot of fun, creative and always educational activities with his students. His upbeat attitude contributes to his excellent rapport with students. He is the "go to " teacher for tech help for some of the teachers in the social studies department. An all around great teacher and person."
3. What are Teachers and Admin Working On at North?
We are very lucky at North: Our educators don't just work hard during their precious minutes in the classroom, they are skilled educators who apply a career's worth of experience and training to deliver an ever improving product that is focused on feedback, research and assessment of results beyond the school day all the time.
- School Wide Data Review: Our entire Faculty spent a significant portion of our November Faculty Meeting reviewing school wide data. In small groups of staff, teachers were given a large amount of data to review and a guided discussion process to follow in identifying key trends, strengths, needs and potential solutions for improvement based on the data. We reviewed state-based data on enrollment, spending, MCAS performance and more. We also reviewed school-based data from Aspen, looking at conduct incidents, unexcused absences and tardy trends, and Term 1 Grade data both school wide as well as across key student population subgroups.
- Roundtable Resource Presentations: Our entire faculty conducted rotations of short, teacher-led presentations on important resources teachers can use and work with right away. Our staff from the new "Bryt" bridge program for students re-entering school from extended absences outlined the referral process and program for our teachers. Our EL staff outlined a new app called "Talking Points" where teachers can directly text parents key information in class, but also have that information directly translated into parents native language if they aren't English speakers. Our Tech Integration Specialist helped outline key AI resources that may help teachers identify resources to help student learning progress in their classes.
- Full Day PD and Keynote Speaker: Our entire district engaged in a full day, district wide Professional Development day on November 5th. Through three different sessions, teachers were able to work together with their department in key curriculum and instruction development. Our Math teachers worked on developing more engaging lessons, our ELA teachers worked to maximize small group reading instruction and celebrating student successes, our Social Studies teachers worked to improve student performance with Document Based Questions and differentiating resources, and our World Language teachers worked to create engaging common assessments for students just to name a few of the focus areas. All teachers attended a full session with Amy Johnson, a facilitator from Project Implicit who helped outline strategies to identify and disrupt the impact of implicit bias in their work.
4. PN Boosters- Mattress Fundraiser THIS SUNDAY!
5. Veteran's Day Assembly
Last Friday, a joint effort by Student Council, VPA and our Social Studies department hosted the annual Veteran's Day Assembly and Brunch for local veterans. Nearly 100 Veterans and their families were welcomed as visitors of honor during our 2nd period assembly with all of the Juniors and Seniors at North.
We had a great presentation put together by Ms. Kennedy's Literature and War Senior ELA students, performances by the Band and Northern Lights, and welcomed our Keynote Address presented by Vietnam Veteran Fred King who was stationed on Phuket Air Force Base during the war. His personal story, self-shot videos of his base and experiences on home video, and inspiring message of "ordinary people do extraordinary things when called upon" resonated with our student population during the assembly.
It was another installment of a bedrock tradition at North that both teaches our students about the service and sacrifice of local veterans and also provides our school community an opportunity to personally celebrate and thank these local heroes for their service across generations.
6. John and Abigail Adams Scholarship Recipients
Every year, the Massachusetts DESE releases the names of the students that scored in the top 25% of the MCAS test as Sophomores district wide. This year, we were elated to have 104 students who were included in that list, and therefore qualified to receive the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship that provides up to $1500 to an in-state college or university.
Congratulations all the seniors who received this honor!
7. PN Powderpuff Game TONIGHT!
