Joyce Carey, Abraham Lincoln Elementary
Joyce Carey exemplifies what it means to be a nurturing, compassionate and adaptable substitute teacher. Joyce is willing and ready to come into the building for any grade level at a moment's notice. When Joyce accepts a job, she connects with the teachers before coming in and stops in the office to make sure she has all of the information she needs to have a productive day with students. Joyce not only follows teacher's plans, but is also able to think on her feet and create meaningful lessons on demand. Throughout the year, Joyce has worked with students to create letters or cards for sick teachers, to make them feel loved and appreciated upon their return to the classroom. Joyce will help with any job big or small when it comes to our school, and does so with a smile and positive attitude. Our building is grateful we are able to call on Joyce to fill in when our teachers cannot be in the classroom.
Carrie Gowans, Benjamin Franklin Elementary
If there is not a full schedule of meetings, Carrie will take the initiative to find another classroom to help. She subs for us on Tuesdays and various other days, usually with a last minute call from me, in desperation. When we make changes to her schedule or combine schedules with absent aides, she is more than happy to comply. She is a hard worker that will jump in and help wherever needed. She helps other subs that are having problems logging in and finding sub plans. She is creative when it comes to sub plan links that don't open; she'll come up with an alternative lesson plan. When you see Carrie in action, you can tell she loves the kids and cares for them. She is professional and a really kind & caring person.
Brenda Holt, Churchill Elementary
She is warm and welcoming with the children. They LOVE it when they hear she will be their sub as she relates, listens and helps them to facilitate solutions. She encourages learning and problem solving. She comes early and stays late, staff is at ease when they know their class is in her hands.
Jeanne Wasser, Forest Glen Elementary
While it is extremely difficult to choose just one top substitute as all of the substitutes go above and beyond for Forest Glen Elementary School. If forced to choose just one person, Jeanne Wasser is our top pick. Jeanne is always ready to go above and beyond for us and has been substituting for us consistently for several years. We always appreciate Jeanne's reliability, commitment and adaptability to any situation put in front of her. There have been numerous challenges this past year with regards to absences and substitute disparity. Every day was a fluid situation and there were always last-minute changes being made to the substitute schedule. Jeanne Wasser always embraced these changes graciously - she rolled up her sleeves and did whatever it took to meet the needs of the day. Jeanne is expert at all aspects of what it takes to be an exceptional substitute. She is organized, requires little direction and oftentimes, is able to solve issues on her own. Her compassion and diverse viewpoints translate very well in the classroom where there are always a number of different personalities to educate every day. We are proud to work beside Jeanne Wasser and pleased she chooses to serve the Forest Glen family of students and staff.
Andrea Nitti, Hadley Junior High
Andrea is a hard worker and does an excellent job preparing for the lessons. She always asks questions when she doesn't understand and shows up and participates in our PLC meetings. She has built positive relationships with kids and has done a nice job teaching them weather concepts for science.
Community Engagement Session is May 14
The District 41 Community Engagement Process continues this month on Saturday, May 14. Join us as the district works with the community to create community-driven solutions to challenges faced in our schools, including space.
Saturday, May 14 -- 10 a.m. – Forest Glen School, 561 Elm Street, Glen Ellyn (combined with Second Saturday Board Coffee and Conversation session).
