A photo of South and North Korean athletes at the mixed table tennis doubles awards ceremony at the 2024 Paris Olympics is also drawing attention in France.
On the 31st, French daily newspaper Le Parisien called South Korea's Lim Jong-hoon and Shin Yu-bin a "historic selfie" for taking photos at the Olympic table tennis mixed doubles awards with North Korea's Lee Jung-sik and Kim Geum-yong.
Le Parisien said, "South Korea and North Korea are still tense," but added, "The photos taken by South and North Korean players on the podium together (in this state) were sensational."
South and North Korean athletes who participated in the ceremony appeared to congratulate each other by shaking hands lightly.
When Im Jong-hoon and Shin Yoo-bin took the podium first as bronze medalists, Lee Jung-sik and Kim Geum-yong, who saw this, applauded them. Later, when the names of Lee Jung-sik and Kim Geum-yong were called out, Korean players also congratulated them.
In particular, the "Victory Selfie Program" is underway in which winners take commemorative photos using Samsung's smartphone in the latter half of the ceremony. At the mixed doubles awards ceremony, South Korea's Lim Jong-hoon held up his smartphone.
He took photos with North Korean and Chinese athletes, including his colleague Shin Yu-bin, in various compositions and poses. Through this, athletes from the two Koreas take photos together using South Korean-made smartphones, which is rare.
"Korean TV channels are broadcasting this scene over and over again," Le Parisien said, adding, "Through this, we try to preserve the rare moment when the two Koreas become one forever."
Meanwhile, regarding taking the podium with North Korean players, Im Jong-hoon said, "When I introduced the silver medalist, I congratulated him," adding, "There was no other conversation."
