AMS Weekly Update

Hello, Adams Families
Week of February 10-14, 2025
As we navigate through February, we have a few important updates to share:
We wanted to take a moment to remind our community about our district’s Truancy (Attendance) Policy and its impact on students, particularly concerning attendance in the first hour of the school day.
Our district policy states that if a student is 15 minutes or more late to any class, including first hour, they will be marked absent for that class period. In secondary schools (grades 6-12), truancy applies not only to full-day absences but also to individual class periods. Please remember that students can be truant for just one hour, as all hours count towards truancy in secondary school.
Students who miss 10% or more of the school year are considered truant, which is equivalent to 18 absences. Students who have missed more than 18 days/individual hours of school are referred to Wayne Youth Services and Westland Youth Assistance programs to help families with getting their children to school.
It’s important for us to work together to ensure students are attending class regularly to avoid falling behind academically and receiving any truancy-related consequences.
We are excited to announce that our Middle School Boys and Girls Basketball teams will be honored on Tuesday, February 11, during the home basketball game at Wayne Memorial High School against John Glenn High School. Students should arrive at 5:30 PM to the Alumni Gym at Wayne Memorial.
All three of our Middle School Boys and Girls Basketball teams will be introduced between the Varsity Girls and Boys games. We would love for you to join us in celebrating the hard work and dedication of our student-athletes.
Admission is free for all middle school basketball players and their parents. Coaches will submit team rosters, which will be available at the door for entry. If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s coach. We look forward to seeing you there to support our teams!
We are also thrilled to announce that our Spelling Bee will be held on Wednesday, February 12, beginning at 10:00 AM. This event showcases the incredible spelling skills of our students and highlights their dedication to academic excellence. We encourage parents and guardians to attend and support our participants as they compete.
Valentine’s Day falls on Friday, February 14, and we’re excited to celebrate with our students during our Activity Day. It will be a fun opportunity for students to engage in meaningful activities focused on kindness, friendship, and teamwork.
Looking ahead, Mid-Winter Break is scheduled for February 17–21, and there will be no school during this time. We hope you enjoy a restful and refreshing break with your families. School will resume on Monday, February 24.
Thank you for your continued support in making Adams a wonderful place for our students to learn and grow.
Go Adams!
Warmest wishes,
Mrs. Bukosky and Mrs. Abbott

Scheduling for the 2025-2026 School Year
Hi Eagles Parents!
It’s that time of the year when 6th and 7th grade students will choose which electives they are interested in taking next year. At this time, we are asking parents/guardians to review the Course Description Guide with their student and discuss which electives they are interested in taking next year. Below is the schedule when Counselors will be in classrooms for students to rank their electives in order of preference. Due to a variety of factors, not every elective will be offered at Adams next school year, however, we make every effort to place students in their top elective choices. Schedules are not finalized until late August, so this is the first step in the six month scheduling process.

Special Education
This month the special education department would like to introduce and highlight our Post-Secondary Transition coordinators. Ashley Linder and Randy Rouke play a crucial role in helping our special needs adults gain the skills they need to have successful jobs in the community. Their Support and knowledge of our students is amazing and appreciated.
My name is Ashley Lindner and I am a Transition Coordinator who works with high school-aged students and those in the adult transition program. I am passionate about my role, and I find it rewarding to witness students grow and succeed in achieving their future goals. My work involves collaborating with staff, students, and families to connect them with resources from outside agencies, supporting their transition from school to the next phase of life. I place students in community job sites through the Work-Based Learning Program, helping them build transferable skills for future employment. Additionally, I attend IEP meetings and assist staff with writing compliant transition plans to ensure a smooth and successful transition for each student. Outside of work, I cherish the time I spend with my family. I am a proud and grateful mom of two boys, Lawson (7) and Beau (2), I have a loving husband Bryon and our loyal dog Tommy.
My name is Randy Rouke, and I am a Transition Coordinator dedicated to supporting adult transition students as they take important steps toward independence. I love my job, especially the rewarding experience of watching students reach their fullest potential. My work involves setting students up with job sites, assisting staff with writing transition plans, connecting families with community agencies, and providing valuable transition resources and services. Outside of work, I am a proud mom to two amazing boys, Grady (12) and Graham (9), and I cherish time with my husband, Geoff, and our beloved Boston Terrier, Rusty.
Happy National School Counseling Week
We want to take a moment to say how much our counselors mean to our staff and students. The work they do every day, supporting, guiding, and encouraging our kids, doesn’t go unnoticed.
Adams is a better place because of Mrs. Lentz and Mrs. Blanchette! Thank you for always showing up with patience, kindness, and a willingness to help however possible. We’re so lucky to have you both here at Adams!

Ms. Lentz and Mrs. Blanchette also kicked off weeks 1 and 2 for our Lunch Bunch! It has been wonderful spending time with students getting to know them, setting norms, and creating unique name tags. We are excited to continue our Lunch Bunch in the future sharing our Positivity Project curriculum and completing various mindfulness activities.
Thank you for your continued support at home!

Visual Arts
As we step into February, our art classrooms are buzzing with creativity! In Mr. Miller’s class, students are exploring the world of yarn weaving. This hands-on project is allowing students to experiment with texture, pattern, and color as they create beautiful woven pieces.
In Ms. Martiny's class, students will be embracing the art of 3-D heart designs in celebration of the season of love! These heart sculptures are crafted using folded paper techniques and students are working on building depth and dimension, transforming a simple shape into a dynamic work of art. This project encourages students to think beyond the two-dimensional surface and experiment with form and space.
As we approach February break, we encourage you to explore some wonderful local art experiences as a family. A fantastic option is the Tiff Massey: 7 Mile + Livernois exhibit at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Massey, a trained metalsmith, scales up her jewelry designs into breathtaking architectural sculptures. Her work celebrates Detroit’s neighborhoods and the rich history of West African and African American culture. It’s a wonderful opportunity to explore the intersection of art, culture, and history, and to be inspired by her bold and unique creations.
We hope you take advantage of the many wonderful cultural activities in our community over the break! Have a relaxing and creative February break, and we look forward to seeing all the amazing art your students will continue to make.

Cold Winter Days
⛄ Winter Weather is Here! ⛄
As the temperatures drop, it’s important to ensure your children are dressed warmly for the season. Please remember to:
🧣 Send them to school with a warm coat. Include gloves or mittens. Don’t forget a scarf and hat!
Make sure they have appropriate footwear for snowy or icy conditions. 🧣
Let’s keep our students cozy and ready to learn, no matter the weather!
Bus Cancellations
If your child's bus is canceled, please make sure to inform the school by calling the attendance line or emailing our counseling secretary Mrs. Chene. Let them know that the absence is due to a bus cancellation. The secretary will mark your child's attendance with a "B" for bus cancellation, which will not count against them for truancy purposes. chenek@wwcsd.net
